Teacher Training Bursary & Other Funding
Important Notice
Recently there have been some changes to the way PGCE programmes are funded. Primary and Early Years PGCE and some non-secondary shortage subjects programmes no longer qualify for the Teacher Training bursary. We would advise that you check the TDA website for the most up to date information. However all PGCE students who are eligible UK and EU students will still be able to apply for the Bath Spa University bursary up to £500.
Teacher Training Bursary
The Teacher Training bursary is a training grant paid through the University. There are no tax or National Insurance implications and it is paid in instalments over a nine month period within the academic year from October to June, provided you remain on programme. You apply for this bursary as part of the registration process when enrolling at Bath Spa University. Currently full time PGCE Bath Spa Teachers are paid between £6,000 and £9,000 from the TDA depending on the subject you train to teach (please see table below). You also need to meet the following criteria:
- You are a graduate;
- Meet the requirements for entry onto your PGCE programme;
- Not employed as a teacher in schools or further education institutions at the start of the programme;
- Not undertaking any other initial teacher education programme;
- Meet the requirements of personal eligibility criteria for receiving student support. Eligibility covers complex areas such as residency (i.e. where you live), previous study (i.e. whether you've taken a higher education course before). If you have any concerns about these aspects please contact your Primary Funding Provider;
- Not already have completed and gained QTS status or been registered on a PGCE programme and received training bursary payments.
Please contact Jacqui Gunthorpe for further information.
Please note:
- You will apply for your Training bursary as part of the registration process at Bath Spa University
- Should you cease your studies at any time during your programme the Bursary payments will stop
- That it is your responsibility to provide promptly to BSU evidence of any changes to your eligibility for Teacher Training bursary entitlement, whilst studying as a Bath Spa Teacher. And you repay promptly any bursary overpayment.
