BSU Trainee Teacher Fund

The BSU TT Fund has been established by Bath Spa University to:

  • help Trainee Teachers who may be experiencing financial hardship
  • assist in a financial emergency
  • help students successfully complete their course of study.

Trainee teachers can apply to the BSU TT Fund at any point throughout their course of study and any awards are in addition to other finance students may be in receipt of and does not have to be repaid.

Who can apply?

  • Full and part time PGCE fully enrolled on course at BSU
  • Must be in receipt of statutory funding entitlement, (includes student finance, state benefits, tax credits etc)
  • Must have Home or Home/EU status

Applications are assessed as either a:

  • Standard award; where there is a calculated shortfall between income and expenditure, or;
  • Non-standard award; where there are evidenced exceptional and/or unexpected costs.

How is your income calculated?

  • By considering your student funding entitlement, together with partner's income, if applicable
  • A maximum of £580 per year assumed income is applied in the calculation: this income can be from a variety of sources, such as bank overdraft or savings
  • Those trainees inr eceipt of means tested benfits or tax credits will have this income included.

How is your expenditure calculated?

  • A set amount for general living costs is applied, called Composite Living Costs, (CLC)
  • Your CLC will be a minimum of £73 per week to cover essentail costs, cuch as food, utilities, insurance, TV licence and phone
  • A higher rate of CLC will be applied for trainees with partners and/or dependant children
  • Variable expenditure, such as rent/mortage, childcare, travel, course costs (not tuition fees), buidlings insurance and health costs will be base on local average costs.

How will awards be paid?

  • You will receive any payments via BACS direct to your bank account
  • Any outstanding BSU emergency loans (where there is no method of repayment, or you have defaulted on an agreed repayment) will be taken into account and deducted from your award.
