Eligibility
Whether you are eligible for a TA bursary and the amount that you will receive will depend on a combination of the course that you are taking and your personal eligibility. Both full-time and part-time modes of studying a PGCE course can attract a TA bursary.
To be eligible to receive a TA bursary you must:
- Be eligible for UK student support (including support to EU students). Information about student finance is available on the GOV.UK website. Student support is the student grants and loans that you can apply for from the Student Loan Company when studying on a PGCE course. You do have to apply for this funding to enable your eligibility to be tested before we can consider you for a TA bursary award, but you do not have to take out any loan.
- Have at least a 2.2 honours degree classification
- Not already hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
- Not be taking any other Initial Teacher Training (ITT) course
- Not be employed and carrying out paid teaching work when receiving a TA bursary. (NB School Experience, which is part of your PGCE course, is not paid teaching work.)
Bursary availability and the amount of bursary offered is dependent on your degree classification and the course that you are planning to study. The table below summarises the standard core training bursaries available in the 2013/14 academic year.

Discretionary Bursary
In exceptional circumstances, trainees may receive a higher bursary than their degree class would otherwise merit. This enables the scheme to take account of, for example, trainees with a 2:2 degree but who also have a subject relevant PhD or proven exceptional subject knowledge gained from another career. A discretionary award is essentially an upgrade of the award that your degree classification merits; it is not available to students who do not hold a minimum of a 2:2 degree classification. Your eligibility for a discretionary award will be assessed by a deciding panel which will include the Dean of the School of Education and the Registrar and applications will need to demonstrate exceptional degree-level subject knowledge from your career and background which was not reflected in your highest qualification. You will be contacted as part of your enrolment to be offered the opportunity to apply for a discretionary award if it is applicable to your circumstances.
