Eco Campus
Our Newton Park and Sion Hill campuses are outstandingly beautiful and historically significant. We take our responsibilities to protect this environment very seriously, and we feel strongly that universities have an important role in achieving sustainability and reducing climate change. We have an environmental policy that gives a commitment to continuous environmental improvement, and staff and students share this commitment.
Ecocampus
Bath Spa University is participating in the 'EcoCampus' scheme aimed at developing a nationally accredited environmental Award scheme for universities in England. EcoCampus is closely aligned to the international environmental management System Accreditation (ISO 14001).
EcoCampus covers all aspects of the University's operations, including waste management; energy and water; transport; emissions and discharges; construction and refurbishment; sustainable purchasing; and community involvement.
BSU has been awarded Platinum award under Ecocampus - the highest available.
Living on a 'Green' Campus
There is a comprehensive recycling policy in place across Newton Park, including the halls of residence. All students living here are expected to support this policy, and we hope that they will continue good recycling practice when they move into private rented accommodation in Years 2 and 3.
Students and staff are encouraged to use sustainable forms of transport such as the SPA1 and SPA2 bus services, cycling, and car-sharing.
Food waste from @Moreton, the Refectory at Newton Park, is composted in a 'Rocket', and the compost used on the grounds.
And the new campus development at Newton Park (LINK) has been designed to highest standards of environmental performance - BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) excellent. Features will include, for example, a 'living' sedum roof and energy efficient lighting.
No Use of Animals
Teaching and research at Bath Spa University makes no use of animals other than the observation and monitoring of mammals and birds in their natural habitats for conservation purposes. We always find alternatives to the use of live or dead animals for research.
The Curriculum
Where possible we promote an awareness of the environment and best environmental practice through our courses, which reflect our concern for the natural environment, sustainable development and resource management.
