Fluid Data
Kelly Thompson's Fluid Data combines digital accuracy with textural fabrics, magnifying tapestry-like weavings up to four hundred times their original size.
Designed based on scanned pieces of woven artworks by Kelly Thompson, Associate Professor in Studio Art at Montreal's Concordia University, Fluid Data used the interwoven threads of the fabric as a symbol for the internet and web of the surrounding digital sphere.
The panels, exhibited on MediaWall from 1 to 23 December 2015 and 18 to 31 January 2016, formed part of Thompson's larger project Material Codes: Ephemeral Traces, which 'visually explores the relationship between digital data, scale, trustworthiness and fallibility thorough the medium of woven textiles, while also investigating mutual benefits of closer connections between fine arts textile practices and industrial production methods, and promoting multiple creative collaborations.'
This work was exhibited as part of our new GALA (Global Academy of Liberal Arts) research network, which pairs projects and academics across international institutions.
