Bath Spa University purchased the former Stothert and Pitt Recreation Ground in 2017, and over the next few years we will be developing the site's facilities for use by students, staff, and the local community.
The site will now be known as "Bath Spa Sports Ground". It is the University’s intention to use the site to offer enhanced sports facilities to our students, and increase local community use including the existing cricket and tennis clubs.
Developments and updates
In order to enable the site to be used at during the summer season, we plan to install a temporary building to replace the former cricket pavilion which has been condemned due to subsidence, to make good the parking currently on the site, and alter the entrance from the main road to make it safe. Both the entrance and temporary building will be subject to planning permission.
There are no plans currently envisaged to alter any of the grassed areas.
Approval of planning application to improve entrance and car park
Bath and North East Somerset Council have approved our planning application (17/03374/FUL) to under works with the following benefits for the facilities:
- Enhancement, enlargement of existing access to the site following closure of eastern access
- Resurfacing of existing car park and installation of car park lighting.
It's anticipated that these works will be completed in during the first few months of 2018, to enable use of the site later in the year.

No, it has always been the University’s intention to use the site to offer enhanced sports facilities to our students, and increase local community use including the existing cricket and tennis clubs.
The site currently offers space for cricket and tennis, with additional pitches available for either rugby or American football (pitches to be confirmed).
As we develop the site further, we will be seeking the views of our stakeholders to ensure its use is fit for purpose.
The exact timetable of works is to be determined, but we are working to complete the works to the entrance and car park as soon as possible. We'll share updates via this page and on social media as we progress. We envisage that the grounds will be available for use during the summer and in full operation for academic year 2018-19.
We are improving the parking facilities at the site, which will include capacity for coaches for visiting sports teams. We remain committed to protecting the environment and actively encourage visitors to make use of public transport, cycling, or walking to reach the sports ground.
We'll be sharing regular updates throughout the project on this website and on our Twitter account - @BathSpaSports
There will be consultation throughout the process with students, staff, and members of the public.
