The Makery

The Makery have been working with Bath Spa since 2012. Here’s what they had to say about recruiting part-time staff through our Job Shop.

Why did you get involved with Bath Spa University and what was the outcome?

We got involved with Bath Spa via the Job Shop. We have advertised multiple vacancies online via the service, from life models through to graduate designers – we currently have two full-time members of staff from Bath Spa, and four or five part-time employees.

What are the tangible benefits for the business and the student?

For us, it means we gain access to real talent on our doorstep, right at the start of their career! As we’re a small business, we’re able to nurture students and give them a good start in career. The fact that Bath Spa has a strong School of Art & Design is great that we can employ people who have studied textiles/art, so their interest is perfectly suited.

Describe your experience in one sentence.

It’s been brilliant, really positive!

The student perspective

Poppy Coates, BA Contemporary Arts Practice (2013-2016)

Why did you get involved and what does the role entail?

Finding a job that was related to my degree was a fantastic opportunity that I couldn't miss out on, and so I joined the team in January 2014. I am a workshop assistant, so I set up various workshops and hen parties and then help in the class – whether that's sewing or giving advice. I also am trained in running the haberdashery and also recently started acting as a tutor for our children's parties.

How did you and the business benefit from the activity, and what impact will it have on your future plans?

I have gained so much knowledge that I've been able to apply in my own practice. I've also learnt a lot about my own capability to organise things – becoming a tutor has shown me how far I've come. Regarding future plans, the owners of The Makery are continuing to keep me there and I will be doing more behind-the-scenes work in photographing and styling our products.

I think my impact on the business is that I've been able to be trusted with a lot of roles within business, including running the building on Sundays when a lot of the senior staff are not in.

Describe your experience in one sentence.

My experience at The Makery has been rewarding, the knowledge I've gained has been invaluable and being a part of a fantastic team of individuals has made me feel part of something wonderful.
