    What you'll learn

    Overview

This one-year course develops your portfolio of practical work, ready for you to progress onto your chosen Music or Performing Arts course. It also offers you maximum flexibility – if you develop new interests during your Foundation year, you can move to any of the other Music and Performing Arts courses, following audition / interview.

There are three course strands to the programme. Academic study modules in both semesters develop your research, essay writing and evaluative skills. You then have the opportunity to choose from Music or Performing Arts modules in semester one. The areas covered are music technology, music performance, performing arts textual studies, and performing arts devising. All of these modules combine practical training to develop your technical abilities, understanding of performance processes and the essential theory to support them. In semester two the Foundation Project engages you in creating a performance or piece that builds on your training to date.

If you have an IELTS score of between 5.0 and 6.0 (at entry) you'll complete an accredited language test to facilitate progression onto Level 4 of the undergraduate course of your choosing. To support this, you have the option of taking an English Language module in semester one.

    Course structure

    Semester one

To introduce you to your studies, you take a core academic study skills module that explores the skills you need to write essays and evaluations. It also considers your work in Music and Performing Arts through wellbeing and 'life-management'.

You then choose two of five modules which allow you to tailor the programme to your particular interests.

Our Music Technology and Musicianship modules explore the technical processes required to produce music, and the performance and compositional skills required to make work.

Our Performing Arts Text and Devising modules explore how to interpret words along with essential vocal or interpretive skills, and how to generate new work, drawing on movement and ensemble skills.

For students who speak English as a second language, you can replace any of these four modules with a Communication Skills module that culminates in you taking an accredited language test.

    Semester two

Our Personal Development Planning module develops your evaluative and target-setting skills. The Foundation Project allows you to create a practical piece that encapsulates your learning to date.

All of these modules help you to develop the essential skills and processes you need for undergraduate study.

    Undergraduate degree

On successful completion of the Bath Spa University Foundation Diploma in Music and Performing Arts, you'll progress to your chosen degree course. See individual course pages for the structure of your chosen degree programme:

    • BA (Hons) Creative Music Technology

    How will I be assessed?

Assessment activities at the end of each module will combine written work in the study modules, such as essays and evaluations. In the practical modules assessment is through performances or pieces of work that you generate in rehearsal, and presentation. The emphasis is on practical work supported by academic study.

The Communication Skills module will prepare you to take a separate accredited English language test.

    How will I be taught?

All teaching staff are practitioners. Teaching combines:

    • Classroom delivery
    • One-to-one tutorials
    • Rehearsals
    • Computer lab work
    • Presentations.
