This programme allows you to construct a postgraduate course around your particular interests, and to sample several academic fields before settling on your chosen focus in an extended dissertation/research project.
Curating your own curriculum is central to the course. You’ll be guided in choosing your unique route, through discussion with your tutors.

- Core module: Reading the Liberal Arts
- Optional modules chosen from six themes:
- Philosophical belief systems
- Research skills, questions and practices
- People, leadership and management
- Global and multicultural communities
- Science and the environment
- Major project.
Students who have undertaken work at other institutions that is deemed suitable may be awarded credit through the APL procedure in partial fulfilment of the course requirements (up to 90 credits). See APL process below.
How will I be assessed?
You may be assessed in a variety of ways, depending on the modules you choose. These may include:
- Group/individual presentations
- Research/project portfolios
- Extended research papers
- Social science reports
- Digital presentations or other form of academic or public expression
- Public group performances.
How will I be taught?
You may be taught using a variety of methods, including:
- Practical workshops.
Global Academy of Liberal Arts
You’ll be encouraged to engage with the opportunities offered through the activities and resources of the Global Academy of Liberal Arts (GALA), such as the GALA Outreach Fund which provides funds to enable students and staff to engage with GALA partners around the world.

On this outward-facing, dynamic degree, you’ll benefit from close contact with the University’s Employability Team and dedicated employability sessions.
Low residency option
The low residency version of this course is only available to students applying through our partner institutions overseas by prior arrangement.
We offer several flexible and distance learning modules for a range of credits: 15, 30, 45, 60 at either Level 6 or 7. If you choose to study this way, you’ll be allocated a personal supervisor and a number of support hours. You can gain up to 90 credits following this pathway.
Valuing previous learning
Accreditation of Prior certificated Learning (APL) can be offered if you have successfully completed previous Level 6 or 7 modules at another university. We accept APL for our PG Dip or Master’s qualifications. As a guide, up to a maximum of 90 credits may be credited towards a Master’s Degree and 75 credits towards a PG Dip. We will require a full transcript from the awarding university.
It is also possible to gain accreditation for other kinds of professional developments by compiling an independent study portfolio of professional development (APEL – Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning). What we look for in potential students
We’re looking for engaged and motivated students who are interested in exploring world issues from a variety of perspectives. We value interdisciplinary thinking, so the ability to work collaboratively is an important trait we look for in candidates.
Students wishing to take the low residency option will be expected to submit background information in order to be considered for accreditation by APL for up to 90 credits of either the MA or MRes programme.
We usually require candidates to have a good first degree (2:1 or above) in any academic subject. You may be considered without a first degree, if you can demonstrate considerable relevant experience. You may be asked to attend an interview. Not everyone will need APL to join the course.
If English is not your first language, you will need to provide evidence of proficiency in written and spoken English. A minimum language level of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent is required.
Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) policy
Entry may be available to other candidates who can demonstrate their ability to take the course. This may be through Accredited Prior Learning (APL), for example where previous formal learning other than at degree level (e.g. certain types of professional qualification) may be considered as acceptable, or through Accredited Prior Experiential Learning (APEL), for example where candidates have extensive professional or other acceptable experience, or a combination of both.
The course leader will always consider such cases with advice from the Graduate School. APEL cases will always involve interview. APL may involve transferring previously accredited 7 Level credits as part requirement of a Bath Spa University Award. In such cases the amount of credit that may be transferred may not be more than 66.66% of the total programme of study.
Classification for the Bath Spa University award will be made on the basis of credits studied at Bath Spa University only. Where such direct entry occurs, no award can be given unless the student passes Bath Spa University modules with a credit rating appropriate to that award.
