The EU Settlement Scheme is an immigration route that allows eligible EU/EEA/Swiss citizens and their family members to live, work and study in the UK after Brexit.
If you are an EU/EEA/Swiss citizen and entered the UK before 31st December 2020 you must make an application by 30th June 2021.
There is an exception for Irish citizens who do not need to apply.
How to apply for pre-settled and settled status
Settled and pre-settled status
Once your application for the EUSS is approved, you will automatically be granted the status to which you are assessed as entitled. This will be either Settled status or Pre-settled status.
You will be eligible for Settled status if you have been resident in the UK for more than 5 continuous years. If you are granted this, there will be no time limit on how long you can stay in the UK.
You will be eligible for Pre-settled status if you have been resident in the UK for less than 5 years. If you are granted this, you have permission to stay in the UK for 5 years. Those with Pre-settled status will be able to apply under the EU Settlement Scheme again once they have been living in the UK for a continuous period of 5 years, in order to be granted Settled status.
You may lose your Pre-settled status if you are outside the UK for more than 2 years after it has been granted.
How do I apply?
- Download the EU Exit: ID Document Check app
- Open the app and verify your identity by scanning your passport bio page, EU national identity card or Biometric residence permit (BRP)
- Complete the short application form
Tip: when asked for an email address, use a personal address rather than your Bath Spa email address as you may need to access your account after you’ve graduated.
- Complete the criminality check
- Upload your evidence of residency
Next steps and proving EUSS status
If your application is successful you will get digital proof of your status via email. When needing to prove your status you will be able to log into your account with the Home Office and generate a validation code.
This code can be passed on to others e.g. an employer, to verify your right to work/study or reside in the UK. It will be valid for 30 days and you can log in to generate another code when required at any point.
All EU/EEA/Swiss citizens who arrived to the UK before 31 December 2020 are eligible to apply under the EU Settlement Scheme in their own right.
Close family members (e.g. partners, dependent children) of eligible citizens who were not in the UK by 31 December 2020 will be able to apply as dependents, providing the relationship started before this date and still exists. They must apply before coming to the UK and after their eligible supporting family member has made their own application as the EUSS application number will be needed in the dependent application.
