Oldfield Park Theatre Workshops opens to students

Tuesday, 11 December, 2018

Bath Spa University’s Acting and Theatre and Digital Production students are benefitting from a new, purpose-built facility.

Oldfield Park Theatre Workshops, located near the city centre, has been designed and built to industry standard, replicating the real world production process of staging theatre performances to allow students to work and study in a relevant environment.

In addition to a fully-equipped carpentry workshop and separate carpentry teaching space, a fully-equipped costume making workshop, and a prop making workshop, Oldfield Park Theatre Workshops boasts three rehearsal studios, and a black box space with a flexible and moveable aluminium truss. There are also breakout spaces, quiet study areas, lecture and seminar rooms and an IT Suite.

Imogen Howarth, a third year Theatre Production student, said: “The facilities at Oldfield Park Theatre Workshops are amazing – as a third year, I remember the space we used to have and this space is incredible; it's so much bigger. What's great about studying in this space is that within two minutes I can be in the rehearsal rooms, or in the costume department, and in another two minutes I can be back working on the set-build – it makes the process a lot more collaborative, and all the skills you learn here are so useful for actual professional life.”

Mark Langley, Head of Bath School of Music and Performing Arts at Bath Spa University, added: “It’s is rare that a university is able to provide an all-in-one, industry standard facility for these disciplines, so we’re delighted to be able to offer this with Oldfield Park Theatre Workshops. We have consulted with current students throughout the process, to ensure that the space is reflective of what they need to be able to reach their full potential during their studies.”

Bath Spa University’s Bath School of Music and Performing Arts offers one of the broadest spans of performance subjects in the country. To find out more about the BA Theatre and Digital Production or BA Acting courses visit the course pages on bathspa.ac.uk.
