Personal statement

I am the Head of Department for Education Studies which comprises around 20 staff. The programme offers a variety of honours awards to over 550 students interested in exploring educational issues from a number of perspectives. In the department we have honours programmes in Education Studies, Early Years Education, International Education and Youth and Community Studies. We also have a Primary Teaching pathway to our PGCE (Teacher training) course. I lead an undergraduate education module 'Creativity, Learning and ICT' and teach on a number of other modules. I currently teach on ED4001 and have a fantastic group of first year students.

I am co-leader of the university Centre for Research in Scientific and Technological Learning and Education. Prior to this role I was a founding member of the Centre for Research in Early Scientific Learning (CRESL) which is involved in a number of projects and initiatives and my current research interests are related to science, technology and creativity in primary and teacher education, although don't get the time to teach much science these days. (My first degree was in biological sciences). The team run a number of science education courses for trainees, qualified teachers and science subject leaders, and over the years I have taught on most of them. With the team I have published a number of papers, books and articles on science and technology education. CRESL research projects which I have worked on include:

TAPS - Teacher Assessment in Primary Science' which is a three year project. The first year involves research in schools around the region. 2013-2016.

'Seeing the Science', a funded project working with key stage one teachers who wish to develop the science curriculum in their classrooms (2012-13).

'E-SCAPE' an investigation using 'real time' e-portfolios to assess children's scientific and technological understanding at age 11 (in collaboration with Goldsmiths College London, funded by BECTA and Astra Zeneca Science Teaching Trust).

Before teaching at Bath Spa University I taught in primary schools in the London area, Bristol and Bath.
