Alex Williamson

Personal statement

Alex Williamson teaches part time across all areas and levels of the Graphic Communication course while maintaining an independent studio practice as an image-maker, illustrator and designer. Before joining Bath Spa, Alex taught on the Interaction, Design, Arts BA (Hons) at London College of Communication and BA (Hons) Illustration at University of the West of England (UWE).

Research and external activities

Alex’s work uses collage, print and mark making to explore the intersections between multiple graphic and photographic elements seeking to explore a nonlinear approach to visual narrative and to generate new experiential possibilities for contemporary image making. Alex’s studio practice develops and builds on this approach while working for a broad range of clients in the advertising, editorial, publishing and design fields.

Recent work has involved working with a range of American editorial clients, using this collage based approach to explore and develop an urgent graphic language with which to communicate and respond to contemporary social and political issues such as climate change and social justice.

His collage work was recently exhibited in a major solo show at the Windgate Centre for Art and Design Fort Smith USA.
