Personal statement
Ghazala has taught in both primary and secondary schools and Further Education before completing her doctorate in educational ethnography. She held a post-doctoral Research Fellowship at the Department of Educational Studies, University of Oxford, which focused on the educational experiences of secondary school children from minority ethnic communities.
She has worked for the Open University, as a member of the central academic team responsible for PGCE and Teacher Assistant Certificate (E660), then as a Lecturer at the University of Reading and Senior Lecturer at the University of Southampton before joining Bath Spa University.
Over the years she has contributed to teaching on various programmes, including post graduate ESRC approved modules on Qualitative Research Methods and Philosophical Issues in Educational Research. Currently Ghazala teaches on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes focusing on issues of inclusion and social justice.
She is jointly (with Dr Ben Simmons) responsible for leading the Centre for Research into Equity, Inclusion and Communities (CREIC).
While at Bath Spa University, Ghazala has been involved in international research and teaching initiatives involving students, with colleagues at the College of William and Mary, USA. She has just completed a three year European Project from 2016 to 2019 with six European Universities. Further details of the EDIC project can be found in their open access publication, to which she contributed "Education for Democratic Intercultural Citizenship".
