Personal statement
Julian joined Bath Spa in late 2009, as Carbon Reduction and Energy Manager, to lead the University in its efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, in line with the Climate Change Act 2008 and the resulting strong sector requirements.
Since then, Julian has taken responsibility for the rest of Bath Spa’s environmental obligations. Hence, Julian’s current role is to minimise and manage all Bath Spa’s environmental impacts, including carbon emissions from energy consumption, resource use, waste, recycling, transport food and procurement.
This includes designing and implementing energy-saving and waste-minimising projects, of which there have been many, and promoting sustainable travel, food and general sustainable behaviour amongst staff and students. Julian also contributes several lectures a year on subject areas such as energy monitoring and targeting, climate change, energy management, sustainable business practices and ecosystem management.
Julian is also responsible for ensuring legal compliance to all environmentally-related legislation, which includes the prevention of pollution in all its forms, energy performance of buildings regulations, air conditioning regulations and all waste legislation, to name but a few.
This is all managed using our internationally-recognised ISO14001 Environmental Management System, for which Julian is responsible.
Of course, Julian doesn’t do all this alone. He considers himself extremely lucky to have an equally dedicated and enthusiastic team behind him, in the form of Sara Cundy, who is largely responsible for all engagement-related activities, sustainable food, promotion of sustainable travel and so much more, Sam Henderson who monitors and analyses our energy data, and our newest team member, Laura Faulkener, who looks after WARPit and helps everything else to happen!
If you wish to know any more about what we do or would like to contact us with any environmentally related questions or requests about sustainable travel loans etc; or indeed if you have any comments or suggestions, please e-mail environment@bathspa.ac.uk
