I joined Bath Spa University in 2017.
My role is to drive enhancement of the curriculum across the University. I also support Academic units and the Academic Services team to ensure that the University further develops its reputation for excellent courses, innovative learning and teaching, and the quality of the student experience.
My PhD was awarded for a thesis in Business and Economic History. After teaching and carrying out research in media practice and political economy, I moved to academic management and roles as acting Associate Dean and Director of a large undergraduate scheme. A role in academic development followed and I led on a variety of University-wide projects implementing new approaches to tutoring, student experience, curriculum development and the use of technology in learning and teaching. As a consequence I use a wide variety of change and project management techniques to ensure that innovation and implementation are well supported and effective.
In terms of learning and teaching, I describe myself as having a well-developed philosophy of learning based on Vygotsky, Bourdieu and the work on language of Voloshinov, one-time collaborator of Bakhtin. I have also worked with technology since the early nineteen eighties and pre-date the internet.
I have considerable experience in supporting academic leaders and my practice in executive level coaching and mentoring is accredited by the Institute for Leadership and Management. As a consequence I tend to the opinion that individuals and teams usually have the right solutions for their problems.
