Mike Cardwell

Personal Statement

Mike has taught psychology at Bath Spa since 1997 and is a social psychologist. His specialist area is the social psychology of peace and conflict, and he leads the final year module on this topic. This explores the underlying psychology involved in human conflict, particularly in genocide (for example, the Holocaust, Rwanda and more recent conflicts such as Myanmar) and intractable conflicts (such as Israel-Palestine). Mike has a particular interest in the role of psychology in peace through the study of nonviolence, conflict resolution strategies and the contributory role of women's movements, music, art and photography in changing attitudes toward conflict.

Mike is an experienced author and conference presenter, having written over 30 introductory psychology texts and spoken at hundreds of student conferences on topics linked to introductory psychology, particularly social psychology and peace and conflict. For ten years, Mike was Chief Examiner for A Level Psychology and also an editor of Psychology Review, something he still contributes to from time to time.
