Pat Welsh is comedy specialist and over the last decade he has integrated comedy within the curriculum across all levels of the BA (Hons) Acting programme at Bath Spa.
Most recently he has written and launched BA (Hons) Comedy that provides specialist vocational training in writing and performance. A defining feature of the programme is the opportunity to gain valuable TV studio experience in collaboration with the BA (Hons) Film Television and Digital Production cohort. This year the collaboration has involved six original sitcoms, a panel show, live stand up comedy recording, comedy dramas and a new improv show.
Outside of the University Pat has engaged in research with veteran comedian Tony Allen in search of the defining the characteristics of stand up comedy as an art form leading to the development of a pedagogy to support this. Pat was a student of Tony's in the 90s and was reunited with him when they colluded on the training of the stewards and airport security for Banksy's Dismaland theme park.
More recently, Pat has become a partner in Fast, Fresh and Dirty Comedy, a collective of comedy performers from the local Bath community, that provides a platform for students to gain invaluable stage experience alongside emerging comedians on the comedy circuit. Pat plays a key role in the Bath Comedy Festival, acting as a judge in the New Act Competition and organising street performances across the city.
