Personal statement

Steve Voake is Senior Lecturer in Writing for Young People. His first novel, 'The Dreamwalker's Child' was published by Faber and Faber in 2005 and has since been translated into many different languages. Its sequel, 'The Web of Fire' was one of the books recommended by the Education Secretary in 2007 to encourage teenage boys to read. 'Blood Hunters' (Faber and Faber) won 'Southhampton's Favourite Book Award' and was selected as one of the titles on the national 'Booked Up' scheme in 2009. 'Fightback' won the Bolton Book Award in 2011. The 'Daisy Dawson' series for younger readers became a bestseller for Scholastic in the U.S.

A non-fiction book about insects ('Insect Detective') won the English Association's Best Children's Illustrated Book of 2009.

At Bath Spa University, Steve teaches on the MA in Writing for Young People and the third year module 'Planning and Writing A Novel for Young People'.

Before writing his first novel, Steve was Headteacher of Kilmersdon Primary School in Somerset. In addition to his work at the university, he regularly teaches creative writing workshops to groups of Gifted and Talented children in Wiltshire and Somerset as well as providing creative writing workshops in schools across the country. He is also a regular tutor for the Arvon Foundation.

Steve has given talks on his work at various events including the Edinburgh International Book Festival, Cheltenham Literary Festival, Bath Literary Festival and Aberdeen Storytelling Festival.
