Course studied: MA Creative Writing
Graduating year: 2020

Ann was a lecturer in communication studies and a reporter on local newspapers before taking a job in local government. Her mayor’s office work, along with a blended family, gave her much to laugh and cry about. She uses these experiences in her writing. The Snowman and the Snake is her first novel, although she wrote a booklet for her dyslexic son to give to his teachers to help them understand his learning difficulties, and this was published.

The Snowman and the Snake is aimed at the popular women’s fiction market and has been longlisted in the 2020 Mslexia Novel award. It explores how a dysfunctional childhood affects relationships throughout adult life. Flashbacks show old insecurities resurfacing as the middle-aged protagonist, Jane, is faced with challenging events. These overwhelm her but she is a survivor. It is a dark story, of coercive control, masquerading as a light-hearted comedy.
