Course studied: BA (Hons) History
Graduating year: 2014
Job: Research Support Administrator at Gillian Kenny Associates

After completing her degree, Georgina secured a graduate role as Antiquarian Book Administrator at Rooke Books in Bath. She has now decided that she would like to enter a teaching career, and is gaining first hand experience as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant.

Georgina's story

Since I left Bath Spa, I gained employment straight away as an Antiquarian Bookdealer Administrator. I worked with books dating back to the 1600’s. I held and sold books from first edition Ian Fleming, all the way through to early editions of Foxe’s Book of Martyrs (a piece of post-reformation anti-Catholic propaganda which I studied and adored throughout my degree). We also had early editions of Jane Austen, and rare editions of Lewis Carroll!

This position taught me so much, but I realised how much my degree equipped me for the challenges an administrator in this environment would face. I had to logically solve problems, research solutions and quickly learn processes that I wouldn’t have been able to do if it weren’t for my degree. I worked with ‘Rooke Books’ for a year, and then my partner (Olly, another graduate from BSU) and I moved to Cheltenham to pursue the career I have always dreamt of – to be a teacher.

I transitioned smoothly from Rooke Books to my current employer – Gillian Kenny Associates, a medical market research agency. GKA work with clients such as Glaxo Smith Kline – world pharmaceutical leaders who require research into various different areas of health and medicine.

My work as a Research Support Administrator includes basic HTML coding, IT support, data entry and feasibility reports/projects, as well as meeting and greeting clients and processing incentives for the company.

As an interim position, this has taught me some fantastic skills, however, it is the skills from my degree that gave me the ability to learn how to compile feasibility projects, researching suppliers and presenting them to my manager – I have simply broadened these abilities at GKA.

I have now been offered a position as a higher level teaching assistant – and I couldn’t be more excited. This is my first step on my career ladder. Whilst this is an extremely exciting opportunity, I must stress that my two previous posts have given me invaluable experience that wouldn’t have been possible without the skills I gained from my degree.

"Never give up on your dream of being what you want to be. There have been complications in my way to getting on the road of teaching, but the journey getting there has been really fun!"

''My advice for current students is ...''

Never give up on your dream of being what you want to be. There have been complications in my way to getting on the road of teaching, but the journey getting there has been really fun! I have worked with an early edition of Foxe’s Book of Martyrs! This is something which I never dreamt of being able to do!

Keep contacts close! Networking has really provided me with a lot of open doors that I wouldn’t have necessarily had if it weren’t for liaising with people.

I would also say to take advantage of the extra facilities BSU has, such as the careers department. It will really assist you with honing in on any career paths you want to take, especially if you’re not 100% sure of what you want to do – which incidentally is completely fine! I know plenty of people who have fantastic degrees and have no idea what they want to do as a career. However, they are working as managers for production/distribution companies, HR and more (and loving it!).

''The best thing about the course I studied was ...''

The support network. The campus is beautiful, and the smaller numbers of students really give it a community feel. I miss walking down the drive and waving to practically everyone!

I had some fantastic lecturers, and the resources available really did give me the ability to reach my potential!

If there were any issues within any aspect of your life (not just university problems) BSU were there. You know that there will always be support for you.

''I recommend Bath Spa because ...''

It’s so diverse. There are so many attributes I could give this institution. Its campus is beautiful. Staff are friendly and supportive. The resources available are just fantastic, and you will make so many wonderful friends! I wish I could do it all over again!
