Graduating year: 2010

Imogen's Bath Spa story

I studied Dance and English Literature for a joint honours degree at Bath Spa. I learnt so much through my time there.

The Dance course in particular is so informative, practical and creative. Alongside that I took part in a wide variety of (free!) extra-curricular activities that the University ran and I was a founding member of Novato Dance - a group which continued to run for a decade after we started it.

After graduating I went on to do my PGCE in Secondary Dance at the University of Exeter. I then became the Dance specialist at an Outstanding school in Surrey for several years. There I wrote all of the schemes of work for the department, ran a variety of trips, shows and activities and mentored several trainee and Newly Qualified Teachers.

In August 2017 I started working as a Lecturer in Dance Education at the Royal Academy of Dance - my dream job. I teach both undergraduates and PGCE Dance students. It's a big change and I'm enjoying every moment!

How did the course support your steps into the industry?

I learnt about Contemporary Dance - something that I had never experienced before. This was such an eye-opening experience as it allows for such a wide range of creative freedom. My choreography and analysis skills really grew as a result and it made me appreciate the subject even more.

Why did you choose the course you studied at Bath Spa?

It's on a great campus, it really helps develop creativity and there are loads of additional opportunities if you work hard - like performing in the Dance shows.

"I am most proud of..."

A fair selection of my GCSE students have gone on to study Dance at college, university and at professional training institutions. Let the love of Dance live on!

"The best thing about the course... "

Having a huge amount of creative freedom whilst receiving insightful feedback from the lecturers.

"I recommend Bath Spa because... "

If you are willing to try something new - probably out of your comfort zone - then you will learn. If you are willing to take on-board feedback then you will do well. If you are a hard worker then you will flourish.
