Jasmine's Bath Spa story
Bath Spa was such an enjoyable experience for me; I was thrown into new, exciting opportunities and learned lesson that have helped me to shape my career. Since leaving Bath Spa I have been studying towards a PGCE in Secondary Education (specialising in Dance) at Wolverhampton University and I have been employed as a dance lecturer in a college as part of my placement.
As well as this, I am also a freelance Dance teacher, teaching students ranging from 18-month babies learning ballet to 18-year-old degree level students. I also work in Pavilion Dance South West, which has helped me to keep 'in the loop' when it comes to teaching opportunities or performances. I get the majority of my freelance work through this connection. During my time at Bath Spa, I joined Pavilion Dance South West as part of my work experience module, after this week long experience, I got the job!
I am also a member of an adult contemporary company called Coevo, who perform and are involved in weekly technique classes and workshops. As a teacher it is important to keep my technique and performance qualities strong.
My time at Bath Spa University was an amazing experience, I received brilliant support from my tutors and without this I wouldn't have achieved certain career goals I set for myself. I still have a way to go in terms of my career, however I am excited for the future and my pending PGCE graduation!
"The course has helped me a lot in terms of preparing for freelancing, as we learned how to market ourselves as professionals, as well as learning choreographic ideas to use whilst teaching."
"My advice for current students is..."
It's not what you know, it's who you know – keep networking and gaining connections. These connections open doors to opportunities you never knew existed. Also, say "yes" to something even if you're a little tentative. Have faith in your abilities and work it out later.
"The best thing about the course I studied was..."
The technique training. I feel so much more prepared as a teacher knowing I had such good technique training.
"I recommend Bath Spa because..."
It's an excellent University because the teachers are so knowledgable and they work hard to prepare you for real life outside of University.
