Course: BA (Hons) Acting
Graduating year: 2016
Since graduating from Bath Spa with a first class honours degree in Acting, Jessica has completed a successful run of Luke Barnes' "Chapel Street" with Gritty Theatre at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. She has also taken on her first solo show in the form of "Amateur Girl" by Amanda Whittington.
2017 saw Jessica reprise the role of Kirsty in "Chapel Street" - a run which saw her return to Bath for the 2017 Fringe Festival. The summer of 2017 saw Jessica head to the USA to direct and teach theatre at a summer camp; a job she will be taking on again in 2018. Jessica is currently in rehearsal for "Painting a Picture for the World" by Dave Pitt.
"I was drawn to Bath Spa, not only for the expertise of the tutors and the prestige of the course itself, but also for the beautiful campus and the facilities at our disposal."
How did the course support your steps into the industry?
My time at Bath Spa left me with not only the skills and professionalism to be able to walk into the industry and gain work, but also a community to network within. The importance of maintaining relationships with my peers and tutors was stressed throughout the course and has easily been the best advice I could have been given.
What were your highlights?
A highlight for me was definitely being able to work under Tanya Rich, an incredible tutor and voiceover artist. I learned so much during my time studying "Acting for Microphone" with Tanya, and it fast became my favourite subject.
"I am most proud of..."
Portraying Julie in Amanda Whittington's "Amateur Girl". Working with Gritty Theatre is always a wonderful learning experience, but being able to take on my first one-woman show was one of the biggest challenges of my professional career to date. The learning curve was steep and the rewards were lifelong lessons.
"The best thing about the course was... "
The sense of community built within the department. I gained lifelong friends and colleagues during my time at Bath Spa.
"I recommend Bath Spa because..."
The opportunities available are incredible; in my third year I was able to study under Joanne Howarth at The Globe, an experience that allowed me to grow as a performer in ways I couldn't have imagined. It was an opportunity that came about because the tutors of the Acting course are simultaneously working professionals in their own right, with contacts and opportunities that they are more than willing to share with their students when possible.
