Jordan Coakes completed an Erasmus in Spain in 2013/2014.
Jordan's international story
My Erasmus experience was probably the best experience of University so far. I have lived abroad before but studying abroad offered something completely different. There's something so inspiring and exciting about being alongside so many students who are away from home and want to have an adventure. The university in Spain was welcoming, they organised loads of international student events, trips, and dinners so we had a strong network with other Erasmus students as well as mentors who were local and had also studied at the university.
Although many classes were provided in English, all Erasmus students had complimentary Spanish and Catalan lessons aimed at the individual level of the student. I would recommend having a basic understanding of the language before you go, as it makes every-day life much easier! Also, being able to hold basic conversation means that you're able to connect more with the Spanish students who are the best tour guides!
I would recommend the Erasmus experience to anyone who wants to enhance their studying experience and have an adventure. The people you meet and relationships you build during this time are incredibly special. Some of my Erasmus friends even flew over for my wedding this summer!
My advice if you're going on an Erasmus placement? Say 'si' to everything: try new foods, take a train to somewhere you've never heard of, stay up all night talking and go to the 9am lecture in yesterday's clothes, spend every Sunday at the beach, volunteer for a school placement, join a crazy society. Do Erasmus.
