Course: MA - Fine Art

Julian’s work is centred around an exploration of both personal and cultural identity through investigating the places and objects that inform experiences.

Through drawing and photography Julian maps influences on the development of identity through decoding a sense of place. The complicated approach to production stands in opposition to the tradition of drawing, it subverts the practice and redefines itself as cross disciplinary or hybrid medium, which allows the mechanics of translation to inform concepts of authenticity, memory, contrast and reproduction. Creating the conditions for conversations about regional identity, social / historical constructs and authenticity.

“An engagement with ordinary life also has a political dimension, offering a voice to the silenced and proposing possibilities for change.”

Stephen Johnstone, 2008

Throughout the translation into drawing, Julian transforms scenes of everyday life within a specific cultural narrative into something which communicates the historical and political contexts of the place.
