Artist's statement

Mania, obsession and the materials of madness are at the heart of my work. Through manic processes, I’m embodying cyclical thoughts, grandiosity, rage and over-activity.

‘Psychiatrist Letters 2009-2011’ references asylum art by using to-hand materials: black pens and letters from my psychiatrist.

I burned all of my work in order to create pigment for ‘Ship of Fools’. I smeared this onto sails made from pages of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. These works reveal a controlled, focused violence where sublime madness meets the banal formality of mental healthcare.
