Dr Susan McMillan is Head of the School of Creative Industries at Bath Spa University. She leads the University’s internationally renowned creative writing programmes, as well as the film and media, creating computing, gaming, emerging technology, publishing and journalism degrees. Dr McMillan is also on the University’s Board of Governors.
Prior to her appointment at Bath, she was Head of School in the Faculty of Arts, Creative Industries and Education at the University of the West of England. She also led UWE’s flagship, BBC partnered Master’s degree in Wildlife Filmmaking from its beginnings in 2012.
As Head of School, Susan facilitates major research projects with her team. Her staff are engaged on industrial strategy funded, creative industries research projects, such as Bristol and Bath Creative R&D and the South West Creative Technology Network. She has just set up Bath Spa’s first major partnership with the University of Bath to develop a multi-million pound new motion capture film studio project for the South West.
Susan is also Executive Producer of Bath Spa Studios, an in house commercial production company and film studios, partnered with Pinewood Studios.
Before moving into academia, Susan had a twenty year career as a successful television producer and writer, primarily for the BBC. This career means she has extensive creative networks and outstanding communication skills. She uses these skills to build business engagement and partnership with industry for universities and education providers.
Susan is a Trustee of Film Bath, a member of Directors UK and a regular speaker at national and international festivals. Her real passion is thinking of innovative, ground breaking ideas to develop the next generation of talent for the Creative Industries.
