Without design we would all be naked, sitting in a field. How can design ideas be made material, and how do we ensure that the designs we create are worthwhile, significant and sustainable?

The Design Research Centre is housed within the Bath School of Art and Design and shares its strong sense of identity and purpose. The School was founded in 1854 with an emphasis on training students to meet the needs of local industry.

This link between education and the needs of our community remains a core focus for our design research today and we support teaching and learning at each stage of the curriculum. Disciplines influenced and informed by the centre’s activities include animation, ceramics, curatorial practice, drawing, fashion design, graphic design, illustration, photography, printmaking, textiles, and three-dimensional design.

'Research lies at the centre of our intellectual and operational framework. Through it, we demonstrate our values of imagination, creativity, innovation and enterprise.'

The centre’s activities span across individual staff research projects, active collaborations with staff in other academic units of the University, and colleagues at other colleges and universities. We have an active community of postgraduate researchers in the areas of photography, graphics, textiles and ceramics, and we welcome enquiries for research projects in these and other areas covered by the centre’s staff expertise.

The Design Research Centre is located in a region of exciting and diverse activity in Design, and we are part of that lively community of practitioners, working with partners in the community and in industry wherever appropriate.

For example, a major recent collaborative project, Bristol and Bath by Design (see below), enabled us to uncover the full richness, diversity and potential of design activities in our region, qualities that the Design Research Centre seeks to both support and build upon in its own work.
