Creative Safe Practice

Within the PGCE Art and Design Course, Bath Spa Teachers (BSTs) are engaged in developing, applying, demonstrating and teaching specialist processes and skills both in the PGCE studio and in secondary classrooms.

These involve a range of potentially hazardous activities, with risk to BSTs and to pupils if correct risk assessment procedures are not carried out. The online Creative Safe Practice Video Resource enhances and develops risk assessment and subject knowledge protocols and practice, supporting Health & Safety documentation, Code of Conduct and workshop sessions.

The online video resource supports studio-based demonstrations and practice workshops enabling BSTs to watch skills demonstrations prior to each taster workshop session, noting:

  • Key resources
  • Risk Assessment & Safe Practice Strategies
  • Techniques
  • Pedagogical Points

The videos present demonstrations of studio skills and techniques in relation to subject curriculum requirements as applied to an interdisciplinary Unit of Work on art and cultural development based around Ethiopian art. The aim of the online video resource is to support safe creative studio practice, central to the PGCE Secondary Art and Design Course and other creative arts modules.

It is essential that BSTs and other BSU users watch the Safe Creative Practice Presentation and relevant Videos prior to attending a taster media and techniques workshop session to ensure familiarity with key subject knowledge issues and health and safety procedures.
