Fees and Funding

Tuition fees

For full-time UK and EU students, tuition fees for the Bath Spa PGCE and School Direct Training Programme for 2023/24 are £9,250. Fees for full-time international students are from £15,050.

There are no tuition fees for the Teach First Leadership Development Programme. You’re employed and paid a salary by the school throughout the two years.

Tuition fee loan

You can apply for a non-means tested loan to cover the costs of your tuition fees, up to a maximum of £9,250 for each year. This be paid direct to the university on your behalf. Once your studies are finished it has to be repaid.

Maintenance loan for living costs

Maintenance Loans are available to help with accommodation and other living costs and depending on your circumstances and location, are worth up to £13,022.

Because part of this loan is means-tested, you’ll have to give details of your household income when you apply. The loan is paid to you at the start of term and has to be repaid.

Repaying student loans

  • Loans become repayable in the April following course completion and are combined into a single payment
  • For students starting in 2023/24, you'll only make repayments when your income is at least £25,000
  • Loan repayments are taken direct from your salary – if your income drops below this amount, repayments are suspended
  • The amount you repay each month will be 9% of income based above threshold
  • You pay interest from the time your first payment is made until you pay your loan back in full
  • Any loan remaining 30 years after you’re due to start making repayments will be cancelled.

Bursaries and scholarships

There’s a wide range of funding available to support you during your teacher training. Depending on the subject you want to teach, you could receive a generous bursary or scholarship. Get full information about the funding available to PGCE students.

Bath Spa University PGCE bursary

The Bath Spa University PGCE Bursary Scheme aims to make PGCE courses more accessible to students from underrepresented groups by providing a cash bursary.

DfE training bursaries

Generous tax-free bursaries of up to £27,000 are available to trainees who study a specific fee-based subject in England. This course must lead to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Full details can be found on the Department for Education's Get Into Teaching website

Your eligibility and the amount you can expect to receive will depend on the subject you choose to teach. It also depends on your degree classification or your highest relevant academic qualification. If you’re successful in applying for one of these bursaries, it will be paid to you in ten monthly instalments and doesn’t have to be repaid.

If you have a degree from outside the UK, visit the DfE website for the overseas degree equivalency table. This should tell you the level of bursary your degree may be eligible for.

Teacher training scholarships

Scholarships of up to £29,000 are available for those training to teach physics, maths, chemistry and computing. They're aimed at high-quality graduates who either hold a 2:1 or first-class degree, a master's degree or a PhD, are passionate about their subject and have the potential to be inspirational teachers in their field.

Scholarships are awarded by professional subject associations, and scholars will be selected through an additional application and assessment process. Each scholarship also comes with a package of non-financial benefits, such as early career support and membership of the appropriate professional subject association. For further information and to apply, visit the website of the subject association you’re interested in:

This scholarship is awarded instead of a standard DfE bursary. If you’re not successful, you’ll still be eligible for a standard bursary.

Getting extra help

  • If you have a disability, long-term health condition, mental health condition or specific learning difficulty (e.g. dyslexia), you may be able to get extra help through Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs).
  • If you have children, or there’s an adult who depends on you financially, there may be extra help available – for example, through the Childcare Grant, Parents’ Learning Allowance, Adult Dependants’ Grant and Child Tax Credit.
