Get started

Taking place the week before the academic year starts, Get Started is a three day early induction event for first year students who have disclosed a physical or sensory disability, an autism spectrum, or a physical or mental health condition.

We want you to have the best possible start to your time at Bath Spa.

Get Started 2018 will be from 19-21 September 2018.

Attending the Get Started event can give you some space and time to sort out the everyday things (particularly helpful if you're living away from home for the first time). It's a great opportunity to set up a bank account, ask questions about University life, or learn your way around the campus before the Welcome Week activities start.

There will be a mixture of required and optional activities, such as:

  • Welcome event in the Students' Union
  • Ask the Academic
  • "Money, Money, Money"
  • Walking tour of Bath
  • Tour of the library
  • Quiz night

Please see our events programme for further details.

Frequently asked questions

Where will Get Started take place?

The Get Started event takes place at the Newton Park campus:

Bath Spa University
Newton Park
Newton St Loe

For students who will be studying at the Bath School of Art and Design at Sion Hill, there is the opportunity to visit the Sion Hill campus on the Friday.

I will be living off campus. Will transport be provided for me to get to Newton Park?

Transport will be provided for particular events. Please see below for further details.

  • Wednesday: You will need to make your own way to the Welcome Event. We will organise transport for you to get home to the off-site halls of residence at 7pm
  • Thursday: We will organise transport for you to get to campus from the off-site halls of residence at 9am. You will need to make your own way home - for instance, there will be a U5 bus (run by First bus) leaving campus at 3.40pm
  • Friday: You will need to make your own way to/from the optional activities.

When can I move into halls of residence?

You can move into your accommodation on the Wednesday before term between 10am - 3pm. The day is timetabled around this time frame including registration for the following day's events, therefore you need to arrive between these times.

Can I move into halls early without attending the activities?

You are not able to move into Halls on the Wednesday unless you are attending Get Started. Get Started activities held on Thursday 20th September are compulsory.

Activities on Wednesday evening and Friday are optional. However, we would encourage students to attend the events on all three days as they offer a great opportunity to settle into the start of your University life.

Who will I be living with and will I be on my own?

  • During your time at university you'll be living with a range of people.
  • As you're arriving early, the rest of your flat/housemates won't have moved in yet so you may be the only one in your kitchen for the first few days. But don't worry! There will be other people nearby on campus, with evening events happening on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday where you can meet people.
  • A Resident Life Assistant will be calling round and they will be around on campus during Get Started. Student Support will also operate during this time so feel free to contact us if you're feeling nervous.

What should I wear?

Wear whatever you are happy and comfortable in. Some events will involve moving around and participating in activities. The campus can require a lot of walking (all accessible) so comfortable shoes are a must.

What types of activities are involved?

There is a host of activities involved. These include workshops on money management, engaging talks about reaching your potential and a chance to ask the lecturers questions.

Do I have to attend all the sessions?

  • It is recommended that you attend all three days.
  • Wednesday is a great opportunity to settle in with a chance to meet people and learn about university life in the evening.
  • Thursday's events are compulsory and provide a great foundation for making the most out of your studies and university.
  • Friday is a day of optional activities including tours of the campus/Bath city centre/library, and an opportunity to meet an Advisor and to ask any questions.

I declared a disability on my application but haven’t received an invite to Get Started. Can I still attend?

Unfortunately, we are not able to offer a place on Get Started to all students declaring a disability. As we have a limited number of places, priority is given to students who we think would benefit most from this programme.

If you wish to discuss this further please get in contact with Student Support.
