What you'll learn

Overview

Honours Top-Ups are Level 6 qualifications that enable the conversion of a Foundation degree or equivalent into a full Honours degree.

The course is work-based, with a focus on commercial awareness, professional experience and employability. You’ll pitch your own ‘design for social impact’ to real businesses and public sector organisations and then, in collaboration with your peers, manage a final group showcase which takes the form of a touring exhibition.

By enrolling on this course, you’ll also become a creative and innovative practitioner with a strong understanding of marketing strategies so you can promote your work.

Course structure

This one-year top-up degree comprises three modules covering marketing, finance and promotional strategy, practice within the creative industries, and professional creative practice.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is via a combination of practical exams and coursework, with an assessment breakdown of 55% practical exams and 45% coursework. There are no written exams on this course.

How will I be taught?

This course is taught through lectures, seminars, practical work and live projects.

Students who pass this course are eligible to apply for postgraduate study, such as the Master’s degree in Visual Communication at Bath Spa University. Roles such as art director, creative director, graphic designer or production designer for theatre, TV or film are some of the relevant career paths for graduates of this BA (Hons) Graphic Design Top Up degree.

Competitions and awards

This course offers embedded exhibition and competition opportunities in Bristol and London. In recent years, students from this course have won the New Designer of the Year award, Sky Creative award and Design Council’s Future Pioneers award at the prestigious New Designers Exhibition in London, and also exhibited their work at Paintworks in Bristol.

Where the subject is taught

You'll be based at UCW’s Loxton Campus in Weston-super-Mare, which has been purpose-built for creative arts students, and also in our brand new Education Centre in the Winter Gardens building on Weston seafront. You’ll get your own space in one of our studios, which is yours to use inside and outside of scheduled classes.

What we look for in potential students

Offers are usually made on the basis of successful completion of a related Foundation Degree/Higher National Diploma or equivalent with an average grade profile of 50% or above. External applicants will be required to submit a portfolio of creative work.

Typical offers

You will be expected to have successfully completed a Bath Spa University Graphic Design (Foundation Degree).

Applicants who do not hold a Bath Spa University Foundation degree in Graphic Design may be considered as follows:

  1. There is evidence of curriculum matching of the learning outcomes of the course with those of the Bath Spa University Foundation degree in Graphic Design.
  2. Produce a portfolio of evidence demonstrating relevant and recent work experience equivalent to Foundation degree level.

All applicants to the programme will normally have achieved a minimum average grade profile of 50% in year 2 of their Foundation degree or equivalent qualification.

Applicants may be invited to interview.

It is a condition of entry onto the programme that all applicants will have secured a suitable work-based learning setting* by the time of admission. The suitability of the work will need to be agreed with the programme leader.

* Applicants will need to be employed or self-employed within some aspect of the creative industries either working as an employee for a creative company relevant to individual practice

Interview and portfolio guidance

Your portfolio should consist of a selection of creative work alongside an example of your written work, which should be a contextual analysis of approximately 1,000 words. Your creative work should demonstrate how your skills and ideas have developed over time, and your creativity and personality should be evident. The portfolio could include drawings, paintings, sketchbooks, design development, written notes etc. Remember that you are not submitting everything you have done, but a selection of what you consider to be your strongest work.
