School Centred Initial Teacher Training – Bath Spa University

We've partnered with a range of SCITT providers across the UK to deliver school-centred PGCEs. These courses give students the chance to gain a PGCE with QTS whilst working in their local school.

This information has been updated for 2024 entry.

School-Centred Initial Teacher Training Providers (SCITTs)

SCITTs are networks of schools that have been approved to run school-centred training. They provide practical, hands-on teacher education, delivered by experienced teachers in their own school or a school in their network.

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

Training towards the recommendation of QTS is delivered by each SCITT in their respective schools and SCITT centres, through practical work and taught sessions. On successful completion of training, each SCITT recommends trainees for QTS to the Department for Education (DfE) and confirms this with Bath Spa University for the award of the SCITT PGCE.

Our SCITT PGCE

Bath Spa University’s Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) for SCITTs is designed to ensure that critical thinking and reflection form an integrated part of both Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and PGCE programmes and, as a result, an integrated part of each teacher’s practice.

We work with a growing number of Primary and Early Years, Secondary and cross-phase SCITTs to deliver the PGCE as part of their initial teacher training.

Learning in the classroom is placed at the heart of each assignment, in order to form explicit links with teacher practice, QTS and the Core Content Framework.

Bath Spa's School of Education can provide the SCITT PGCE through one of two pathways:

  • University delivery of the PGCE, providing teaching, academic support and assessment.
  • A franchise partnership, where the SCITT delivers and assesses the PGCE themselves, moderated by the University.

Both routes lead to the award of Bath Spa University’s SCITT PGCE through formal validation.

"As a teacher, your passion and creativity will inspire and shape future generations."
