Metalwork – Bath Spa University

Learn to work with various metals using industrial and traditional tools for fine work and larger pieces.

The metal workshop has a wide selection of steel stock available including bars, flats, angles and tube. We also stock aluminium and steel sheet. Once students have completed the workshop induction, they will be able to use the the machinery and tools:

  • Joining processes - welding, soldering and brazing equipment;
  • Cutting processes – gas and machine cutting tools;
  • Forming processes – machines for sheet metal folding and rolling, tube bending, lathe turning and forging;
  • Equipment – metal cutting bandsaw, pillar drills, oxy-propane cutting and oxy-acetylene welding equipment.

The workshop also has a wide range of traditional hand tools including marking out equipment, files, hammers, dollies, jigs, spanners, clamps etc.

As a Bath Spa student of any course, once you’ve booked and attended your safety induction, you can use any of our workshop facilities.

We work closely with your course tutors to ensure that you’re inducted to the workshops that are relevant to your course, and this process is ongoing and flexible – you’re encouraged to attend refresher inductions as needed so that you’re always working safely with the wealth of techniques, facilities and technical support available.
