What you'll learn

Overview

We’ll help you develop as a person to achieve your potential through teaching you about business and how it works. You’ll graduate with potential for employment in different businesses; this could be an organisation, the private or public sector, a charity or possibly your own business. We aim to give you the skills to apply your knowledge in a wide range of situations in any sector.

You’ll have flexibility to choose modules that are of particular interest to you. You can also bring in modules from areas outside your course if you want to explore issues around a particular ‘theme’, such as sustainability or global affairs.

Course structure

Year one
Gain a broad understanding of today’s business environment - from the context that organisations operate in through to trends in economic thinking and the importance of data in business. Modules will cover topics such as organisations and the business environment, economics and globalisation, and managing data.

Year two
Focus on the inner workings of businesses - use business techniques to solve problems and start developing the skills that employers look for. Modules include a key module in creativity and innovation and a compulsory module in financial accounting.

Optional topics include: human resource management, marketing, information and operations management, and international business. At the end of the year, you can choose to embark on a ten-month business placement or a ten-week summer placement - applying what you’ve learned so far in the real world.

Year three
Develop and explore your business learning and focus on the role of management. Undertake an in-depth business research project in your specialist area. You’ll also have a chance to set up a business on your own or with fellow students. Other topics to explore include: managing sustainability, marketing for managers, new trends in management, and strategic human resource management.

How will I be assessed?

You'll be assessed in a wide range of ways that will test your business knowledge and management skills. These could include presentations, work related projects, group-work, computer based simulations, podcasts, examinations, essays, videos and business reports.

How will I be taught?

We offer variety in the way we teach: sometimes we will set you problems so you can find the answers for yourself, sometimes we will lecture. Most modules use a mix of lectures and small group seminars. There is a good blend of online activities using our Virtual Learning Environment, Minerva. We invite business leaders in to talk about their experience and we arrange visits to local businesses.  All of our teaching methods facilitate your development as a self directed learner.

You’ll be given personal support in your study - we are a friendly team of academics who are committed to helping students achieve their goals.

Opportunities

Study abroad

You’ll have the opportunity to study in a wide range of locations around the world. Our students have completed Erasmus+ and Exchange programs in a variety of countries including Holland, Belgium and China.

Business community projects

We give you the opportunity to work with regional and national businesses in and around Bath. You’ll be working on live project briefs, helping organisations find creative solutions to their business issues.

Depending on your pathway and the modules you study, you can gain accreditation by professional bodies and get exemption from professional exams.

BA (Hons) Business and Management (all pathways)

  • AQUIROS Prince2 ® Project Management (Last confirmed: 2017)

PRINCE2 (an acronym for Projects in Controlled Environments) is a process-based method for effective project management. Used extensively by the UK Government, PRINCE2 is also widely recognised and used in the private sector, both in the UK and internationally. 

People Cert has officially Accredited Bath Spa University on behalf of ACQUIROS, as an Accredited Training Organization (ATO) for delivery of the PRINCE2 ® Foundation Certifications. Students who take the Level 5 Operations and Project Management will have the option of taking the AQUIROS online test to achieve the Prince2® Foundation Certificate.

  • Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) (Last confirmed: 2016)

The CIM is the world’s leading professional marketing body with over 28,000 members worldwide, and a Royal Charter. Our BA (Hons) Business and Management students can gain exemption from the marketing module of the CIM Level 4 Professional Certificate in Marketing.

  • Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) (Last confirmed: 2016, Renewal date: 2022) 

The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), founded in 1919, is the world’s leading and largest professional body of management accountants. Bath Business School have secured professional body recognition of the BA (Hons) Business and Management which provides graduates with exemptions from the following:

CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting:

- BA2 Fundamentals of Management Accounting
- BA3 Fundamentals of Financial Accounting

Bath Business School has partnered with CIMA / SAGE who produce the UK's market leading accounting software, to offer a new training qualification that will offer an excellent grounding in computerised accounting. The qualification will offer benchmarked skills that will enhance employability and put control into a business.

Students who take the core Level 4 Managing Data module to have the option of taking the online test to achieve the CIMA accredited SAGE foundation certificate.  

BA (Hons) Business and Management (Festivals and Events) and BA (Hons) Business and Management (Tourism Management)

  • Institute of Hospitality (IoH) (Last confirmed: 2017, Renewal date: 2022)

The IoH is an international hospitality professional membership body for managers and aspiring managers who work and study in the hospitality, leisure and tourism industries. Established in 1938, the IoH helps more than 10,000 hospitality professionals in 100 countries grow their knowledge, professional profile and expertise by offering a wide range of high quality membership services.

Graduates are eligible to apply for the Associate (AIH) grade of membership, and following an assessment may also meet requirements for the member (MIH) grade.

  • Chartered Association of Business Schools (CABS) (Last confirmed: 2017)

CABS holds a Royal Charter, and is the voice of the UK’s business and management education sector. CABS support members to maintain world-class standards of teaching and research, and help shape policy and create opportunities through dialogue with business and government.

Bath Business School are members of CABS, and the Dean of Bath Business School, Professor Georgina Andrews is the Vice Chair of CABS Learning, Teaching and Student Experience Committee.

Work placements, industry links and internships

In addition to the business community projects, you’ll have fantastic opportunities to work closely with business and industry through placements, projects and internships.

Careers

Employers such as Logica, NHS, Liberty, Ocado, IBM, Marks and Spencer, American Express, Sky and Numatic International have recruited graduates from this course. Students have also gone into roles including Business Analyst, IT Services Analyst, Project Officer, Business Development Manager, Account Executive and Brand Planner.

Professional placement year

Overview

This optional placement year provides you with the opportunity to identify, apply for, and secure professional experience, normally comprising one to three placements over a minimum of nine months. Successful completion of this module will demonstrate your ability to secure and sustain graduate-level employment.

By completing the module, you'll be entitled to the addition of “with Professional Placement Year” to your degree title.

Preparation

Before your Professional Placement Year, you'll work to secure your placement, constructing a development plan with your module leader and your placement coordinator from our Careers and Employability team.

How will I be assessed?

On your return to University for your final year, you'll submit your Placement Portfolio, detailing your development on your placement.

Our library offers a wide range of business materials. There is also a wealth of material available via electronic sources. These include Business Source Complete, Mintel, Newsbank and an increasing range of e-books. This online material can be accessed on and off campus enabling you to work at times that suit you.

What we look for in potential students

We’re looking for individuals who are enterprising and creative. You’ll need to have drive, motivation and the get-up-and-go to achieve in a challenging environment.

Typical offers

We accept a wide range of qualifications for entry to our undergraduate programmes. The main ones are listed below:

  • A Level - grades BCC-CCC with Grade C in Business or related subject preferred. Applicants without business studies A Level can apply but will need to demonstrate a strong interest in Business in their personal statement.
  • BTEC - Extended Diploma grades Merit, Merit, Merit (MMM) accepted in a business or related subject.
  • International Baccalaureate - a minimum of 26 points are required in addition to evidence of a strong interest in Business in your personal statement.
  • Access to HE courses - typical offers for applicants with Access to HE will be the Access to HE Diploma or Access to HE Certificate (60 credits, 45 of which must be Level 3, including 30 at merit or higher). Any selection procedure/further requirements will also apply.

English Language Requirements for International and EU Applicants

  • IELTS 6.0 - for visa nationals, with a minimum score of IELTS 5.5 in each element.

Study Publishing as a joint subject and learn to shape stories, information and ideas for print and digital.

  • 95% of our Publishing graduates were in work/further study six months after graduating (DLHE).
  • This is the UK's first creative and digital studio-based BA Publishing course.
  • Our graduates have been employed by BBC, Taylor and Francis and Penguin Random House.

Publishing provision at Bath Spa University is characterised by innovative approaches and creative studio-based collaborative working, high-quality making across all published forms from hand-made and print to digital and live.

Publishing is one of the UK’s largest creative industries and an international industry which shapes and presents content across a wide range of subjects. Publishers find an audience for a variety of publications, from books and magazines to innovative apps and websites.

We’ll equip you with a wide range of the latest digital making skills, such as the all-important Adobe InDesign, web and multimedia social content, alongside core publishing skills such as copywriting and editing, design, layout and marketing.

Through collaborative project development, you'll acquire essential creative skills in working with others, carving out your own role and achieving high-quality results. You’ll graduate with industry experience and a stunning digital portfolio of your work.

What you'll learn

Overview

You’ll graduate with essential publishing skills, from writing persuasive, concise copy and text editing, to communicating brand identity and audience research. We’ll teach you how to layout content and manipulate images using industry-standard software, with opportunities to develop your skills in image use, video; photography; app creation; and HTML.

Additional modules offer the chance to specialise and deepen your knowledge and skill base, and to work on larger personal projects linked to your career aims.

Course structure

Year one
We’ll introduce you to core publishing principles, with a focus on copywriting and editing. You’ll become familiar with layout, production and publishing software. There will be weekly deadlines, so you’ll get used to turning around work quickly and in a well-presented form. Alongside this you’ll start to build an in-depth knowledge of the publishing industry.

Year two
You’ll gain greater insight into particular areas of publishing, such as marketing, editorial and design. Optional modules allow you to delve deeper into areas such as illustrated books, fiction editing, and the use of publishing skills for social enterprise and charity work.

Year three
Tutors will guide you to focus your skills and knowledge around your personal creative and career interests. You’ll be encouraged to develop your individual approach as a creator, curator or project manager; your final portfolio will reflect this, showcasing your work for prospective employers. Optional modules cover magazines, book commissioning, digital literary studies, cookery publishing, and children’s books.

How will I be assessed?

You’ll be assessed by coursework, including portfolios, essays, feature articles, reflective commentaries and reports. In some modules you’ll share your work through short, informal presentations.

How will I be taught?

You’ll be taught through creative workshops, skills labs, seminars and lectures. You will learn to be adept at project management and product development following a research and development process. We work on-screen and beyond: creating sketchbooks; making physical prototypes; getting out and meeting people; finding opportunities.

Throughout the course, you’ll work to briefs set by your tutors or industry collaborators, as well as working on your own projects. We expect you to work with flair and enthusiasm, taking your ideas and developing them into industry standard work.

Opportunities

Study abroad

Students can choose to study abroad; this is a great opportunity to develop knowledge of other book markets as publishing is an international industry.

Field trips

From visiting bookbinders and letterpress companies to climbing Britain’s tallest spire and visiting bookshops for talks and research, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in field trips across the Publishing modules.

Work placements, industry links and internships

Students have the opportunity to work on live projects and collaborations. We have worked with international and local clients such as TEDxBristol, X Media Lab, the National Trust, Forest of Imagination arts events, and Bath Film Festival.

With our support, many students carry out work experience and freelance work. The Publishing lecturers have had a great amount of experience in the industry, putting us in an excellent position to help students and graduates with networking opportunities.

We support applications for the Parragon Books paid internships and work with industry contacts to develop internship and work experience opportunities for students. 

The 'Future Publishers' initiative aims to encourage new publishing talent and increase diversity in the industry. Since 2011, Publishing staff and students have delivered inspiring magazine and book-making workshops for children and young people in schools and at live events e.g. Forest of Imagination

Students have also worked on Social Media Experiment, a tutor-directed project creating live social media coverage of cultural and tech events, and Milk Magazine, a student managed digital and print student magazine.

Careers

Publishing graduates have gained a range of professions including Production Assistant; Digital Editor; Digital Marketing Coordinator; Events Organiser; and Project Manager. Graduates have been employed by publishing companies including:
