What you'll learn

Overview

You’ll find yourself immersed in a world of exciting choreographic opportunities, broadening your understanding of performance making. You’ll regularly present your work in a variety of performance projects, with lots of opportunities to work alongside professional artists and companies. We’ll encourage you to develop a critical and analytical mindset that will support your creative enquiry.

Technique forms an important part of the course, full-time dance students benefit from four to five classes in the studio on a regular basis. Cunningham and Limon­ based classes, somatic practice and contact improvisation are all part of your technical training and give you the chance to develop into a strong and confident dancer.

Each year you’ll take performance modules with visiting professional companies. As part of this, you’ll take part in intensive projects that build your skills as a maker and performer. We’ll introduce you to the exciting world where dance intersects with other art forms to make performance work.

Please note, if you choose to study dance as a combined award, you won’t study all the available modules. You can choose to study a joint degree, or you can place greater emphasis on one subject by taking it as a major.

Course structure

Year one
Your first year will be a fast-paced, challenging experience that builds your skills in the key areas of performance, creativity and critical thinking. You’ll work on regular performance projects, creating solo, small group and large ensemble work. We introduce you to new ways to think and move that will help you to broaden your skills as a dance artist.

Regular sessions with visiting companies and artists will help you expand your understanding of the dance industry and inspire you to think about your own career aspirations.

Year two
You’ll stretch your creative and performance skills in exciting new directions. A wide range of practical sessions will deepen your understanding of how performance work can be created for different contexts; we encourage you to see yourself – and the work you make – within a broader perspective.

The visiting guest artist programme continues to provide you with inspirational workshops and residencies that help to build your knowledge of the field and inform your artistic practice.

Year three
You’ll focus on developing a specialist area. Modules allow you to follow a specific pathway that supports your interests, such as performance, choreography, teaching, dance movement therapy. You’ll embark on a large scale performance project, as well as completing a work placement with a professional dance organisation and undertaking an independent project that you design and manage to completion.

Regular individual tutoring, with specialist dance careers staff, will help you build a plan for after you graduate. We pledge to continue to support you as part of our graduate alumni scheme, no matter how long ago you graduated.

How will I be assessed?

We’ll assess your work in a variety of ways such as practical performances, presentations, portfolios and essays. Practical projects may be assessed on your creative process, the final product or both.

How will I be taught?

The course has a strong practical focus with workshops, technique classes and choreographic laboratories. These are led by qualified staff and visiting choreographers and artists.

Digital technology plays a significant role in the course; we apply it to creative practice as well as using it to teach. Screendance, and the integration of digital media in live performance work is a distinctive feature of the course.

Performances and events

As a Bath Spa dancer, you'll be part of a busy events calendar that will allow you to both participate in and watch professional dance performances. We’ll encourage you to participate in dance festivals and exhibitions, and you’ll have the opportunity to apply for choreographic platforms and screen dance festivals. 

Professional placement year

Overview

This optional placement year provides you with the opportunity to identify, apply for, and secure professional experience, normally comprising one to three placements over a minimum of nine months. Successful completion of this module will demonstrate your ability to secure and sustain graduate-level employment.

By completing the module, you'll be entitled to the addition of 'with Professional Placement Year' to your degree title.

Preparation

Before your Professional Placement Year, you'll work to secure your placement, constructing a development plan with your module leader and your placement coordinator from our Careers and Employability team.

How will I be assessed?

On your return to University for your final year, you'll submit your Placement Portfolio, detailing your development on your placement.

You can hire out equipment using SISO, Bath Spa University’s free equipment loan service. We provide a huge variety of equipment including laptops, ipads, projectors and cameras.

Typical offers

We accept a wide range of qualifications for entry to our undergraduate programmes. The main ones are listed below:

  • A Level - A Level grades CCC or higher, including Grade C in Dance, Performing Arts or related subjects accepted  
  • BTEC - Extended Diploma grades Merit, Merit, Merit (MMM) or higher in Dance, Performing Arts or related subjects accepted
  • International Baccalaureate -  A minimum of 26 points will be required in addition to evidence of further experience/ qualifications in dance or performing arts
  • Access to HE courses - Typical offers for applicants with Access to HE will be the Access to HE Diploma or Access to HE Certificate (60 credits, 45 of which must be Level 3, including 30 at merit or higher)  in addition to other qualifications and experience in Dance
  • Graded Dance qualifications above Grade 6 also accepted in addition to other qualifications listed above.

English Language Requirements for International and EU Applicants
IELTS 6.0 - for visa nationals, with a minimum score of IELTS 5.5 in each element.

Interview and portfolio guidance

If you apply, we’ll ask you to attend an audition day so that we can assess your suitability for the programme. The audition gives you a chance to demonstrate your physical dance skills and your creative abilities. Your personal statement is your chance to show your skills and experience in dance. We want to know about what inspires you and what you hope to achieve with your training.

Auditions will consist of:

Technique Class
We are looking for commitment, enthusiasm and physical evidence of dance training to an appropriate level (alignment, accuracy, energy).

Creative Workshop
We are looking for creativity and imagination, the ability to work as a group and to create and present work in a contemporary style.

Course Overview/ Q&A Session
This session should clarify what you can expect from the course in terms of practical and written requirements, workshops, projects and placements. We will also be able to answer individual questions to help you to decide whether this course is right for you.

Eligible applicants will be invited to auditions at our Newton Park Campus between December and March.We do not charge an audition fee.

Bath Spa is a founding member of the British Education Studies Association (BESA), and was among the first universities to establish Education Studies as a degree subject in 1999. Since then, the School of Education has been influential in the development of the subject.

Education studies is about how people develop and learn, the nature of knowledge and critical ways of knowing. As a student, you’ll analyse educational processes and their cultural, social, political and historical contexts, and gain perspectives on economic relationships, globalisation, international education, ecological issues and human rights. Education studies also deals with beliefs, values and principles in education and the way that they change over time.

Education studies provides a sound basis of critical analysis, preparing you for a variety of professional career routes in education.

What you'll learn

Overview

You’ll gain knowledge and understanding of:

  • the core disciplines that contribute to the study of education: history, philosophy, psychology and sociology
  • the diversity of learners and the complexities of the learning process;
  • the development of schooling, teaching and education policy in the UK and internationally;
  • the wider economic, political and socio-cultural contexts of education
  • enquiry methods used in education;
  • career options across the education sector

You’ll gain first hand experience of the education sector through the professional placement module in your second year. This is designed to help formulate your career identity and professional development needs. You’ll further learn how to present your ideas confidently in a variety of ways, know how digital technology is used for various learning and professional purposes and to work both collaboratively and independently.

Course structure

Year one

You’ll be introduced to the basic principles of education: who we educate, why we educate and how we educate.

You’ll gain an understanding of how educational enquiry informs policy and practice, and get an introduction to some of the key disciplines and theoretical perspectives that inform the study of education.

Year two

Using an interdisciplinary approach, you’ll focus on understanding the core issues impacting educational experience and outcomes.

In semester two, you’ll engage in a placement in a professional education setting such as with a local authority service, charitable or youth organisation or school. This will enable you to see firsthand how theory translates into practice, and permit you to try out potential career options.

You’ll have time to reflect on your career identity and your professional development needs. You will work closely with our careers service in understanding the career opportunities available to you across the education sector, both at home and abroad.

Professional Placement Year

The optional Professional Placement Year between level 5 and level 6 is an ideal opportunity to further develop your understanding of the professional education sector. It allows you to ‘try out’ a potential career pathway and to focus on the acquisition of key professional skills. It’s also a good way to grow your professional networks.

Year Three

Your final undergraduate year is an excellent transition into employment or further study. You’ll continue to develop your own interests and apply theoretical perspectives through a wide range of optional modules.

The core modules offer a supported approach to educational enquiry through the taught dissertation. You’ll be able to study an area of interest using principally desk-based approaches. You’ll work together in action learning sets, gaining weekly support from your peers and academic tutors.

How will I be assessed?

You’ll be formally assessed through coursework. There are no exams.

Assessments could include essays, group presentations, research-based reports and portfolio-based work. We’ll provide you with regular feedback on how well you’re doing and give you regular guidance on how to improve your skills, knowledge and understanding.

We provide many opportunities for formative assessment and feedback as well as a personal reflection on your progress, learning needs and goal setting.

How will I be taught?

Teaching is through a mix of lectures, seminars, online directed tasks and individual tutorials. Seminars provide opportunities for you to discuss, ask questions and get involved in activities and debates. In year one and two your minimum timetabled time will be 12 hours per week.

You’ll be taught by experienced university staff, many of whom are actively engaged in academic research and publication which informs their teaching. You will also benefit from visiting speakers – these include headteachers, educational advisers, specialist researchers and international visitors – and our careers advisors and experts in academic skills based in the Writing and Learning Centre.

Opportunities

Study abroad

You’ll have the opportunity to study in a wide range of locations around the world, by taking advantage of our Erasmus+ and Study Abroad programmes.

There are opportunities to undertake extra-curricular study visits abroad. In your first year there is an opportunity to take part in a study visit to Spain; in year two in Zambia; and in your final year, Nepal. Please note that these trips involve additional costs, e.g. for travel and accommodation.

Work placements, industry links and internships

100% of our undergraduate students in the School of Education take part in a placement during the course of their degree. In year two there is a compulsory placement for all students of Education Studies in a professional educational setting within the sector or in a school.

Previous students have also worked with charities, youth centres, and third-sector organisations, Local Authorities as well as schools and early years settings and in Higher Education departments.

We’ll also support you in finding volunteering opportunities during your time with us.

Careers

Education Studies will provide an excellent basis for you to work with learners of all ages in different settings and contexts. You may choose to work in educational and training advisory roles in a range of organisations including local community , youth clubs, businesses, local authorities, non-government organisations and charities, museums, art galleries and libraries or policymaking.

As well as going on to study for the PGCE our graduates have been recruited by Nottingham Trent International College, Explore Learning, the NHS and many schools and Local Authorities working in Educational roles such as tutors, trainers and Higher Level Teaching Assistants.
