Studying Drama at Bath Spa gives you the performance, critical and creative skills you need to launch yourself into a variety of exciting careers.

You'll explore your creative identity through core and optional modules in areas of practice such as play production, performing, writing and directing, and topics such as Shakespeare, musical theatre, physical theatre, applied theatre and media and performance.

What you'll learn

Overview

You’ll study plays, practitioners and genres that have been particularly influential in shaping contemporary theatre and performance. We give you the opportunity to explore:

  • Theatre practitioners
  • Playwrights
  • Performance making
  • Writing, directing and performing.

The course also includes a focus on:

  • Plays and musical theatre productions in the University Theatre
  • Theatre in education performances and workshops in local schools
  • New plays written by students
  • New and existing works devised, directed and performed by students.

Course structure

Year one
Build the foundations. You’ll gain skills in working with play texts as part of a theatrical ensemble, performing and directing, theatre production and performance; these will underpin your work in years two and three. 

Year two
Apply your skills. You’ll work with local practitioners, collaborate with local venues and learn from visiting professional companies and artists. You'll also have the opportunity to apply yourself in a variety of performance projects. Our focus is allowing you to create original work, while you explore your particular areas of interest such as physical theatre, applied theatre, musical theatre and theatre production.

Year three
Develop your specialisms. Increasingly, you'll define and manage your own work, and carry out research into an area of drama or performance of your choice. You may explore topics such as performance, staging gender, modern American drama, staging Shakespeare, musical theatre, theatre for social change, media and performance, and devising. There's also the opportunity to collaborate with staff on projects relating to their areas of expertise.

Opportunities

Work placements, industry links and internships

You’ll benefit from visits from industry professionals. Previous visitors have covered a range of specialisms including: playwriting, directing, acting, television production, theatre in education, and children’s theatre. We also have partnerships with local venues, local schools and local community groups.

You'll also get the chance to take part in Dramafest – a festival of performance that's devised and run entirely by students. This event typifies our way of teaching, which is to enable you to experience a wealth of roles and approaches so that you can find your passions and choose to specialise in them if you wish. 

Drama students create the material for Dramafest, then perform and produce it. They design and construct the sets. They take on roles in stage management, publicity, and health and safety. In doing this, they gain transferable skills such as project management, collaboration and teamwork, that they can use in a range of careers.

Dramafest will be a chance for you to discover your strengths and define your own roles within a project; an invaluable skill in the workplace. Find out more about opportunities within the Drama department on our interest area page.

Careers

We equip you with creative, collaborative, writing, presentational and communication skills that are useful in many professional and vocational areas.

Some graduates choose to pursue postgraduate study, especially in teaching, or vocational training. Recent graduates have gone on to study Master's degrees at Central School of Speech and Drama, Yale Theatre School and the Royal Academy of Music.

Other graduates launch careers in the creative industries, including working with theatre and media companies. Some of our Drama graduatesare now:

  • Principal of an Academy of Performing Arts
  • Dramatherapist and Tutor.

Professional placement year

Overview

This optional placement year provides you with the opportunity to identify, apply for, and secure professional experience, normally comprising one to three placements over a minimum of nine months. Successful completion of this module will demonstrate your ability to secure and sustain graduate-level employment.

By completing the module, you'll be entitled to the addition of 'with Professional Placement Year' to your degree title.

Preparation

Before your Professional Placement Year, you'll work to secure your placement, constructing a development plan with your module leader and your placement coordinator from our Careers and Employability team.

How will I be assessed?

On your return to University for your final year, you'll submit your Placement Portfolio, detailing your development on your placement.

Where the subject is taught

You'll benefit from use of teaching and rehearsal facilities on the Newton Park campus and also from use of Burdall's Yard, a specialised and atmospheric performance venue in the City Centre that is particularly well suited to less conventional or more intimate cabaret, theatre or comedy performances.

We’re looking for dynamic individuals with an interest in exploring a wide range of drama and performance forms. You’ll typically have CCC or above at  A-Level including a C grade, or above, in Drama, Performing Arts or English.

Typical offers

We accept a wide range of qualifications for entry to our undergraduate programmes. The main ones are listed below:

  • International Baccalaureate - A minimum of 26 points required in addition to evidence of additional qualifications or experience in Acting, Drama or Theatre Studies.
  • Access to HE courses - Typical offers for applicants with Access to HE will be the Access to HE Diploma or Access to HE Certificate (60 credits, 45 of which must be Level 3, including 30 at merit or higher) accepted in addition to evidence of additional qualifications or experience in Acting, Drama or Theatre Studies

English Language Requirements for International and EU Applicants
IELTS 6.0 - for visa nationals, with a minimum score of IELTS 5.5 in each element.

Bath Spa is a founding member of the British Education Studies Association (BESA), and was among the first universities to establish Education Studies as a degree subject in 1999. Since then, the School of Education has been influential in the development of the subject.

Education studies is about how people develop and learn, the nature of knowledge and critical ways of knowing. As a student, you’ll analyse educational processes and their cultural, social, political and historical contexts, and gain perspectives on economic relationships, globalisation, international education, ecological issues and human rights. Education studies also deals with beliefs, values and principles in education and the way that they change over time.

Education studies provides a sound basis of critical analysis, preparing you for a variety of professional career routes in education.

What you'll learn

Overview

You’ll gain knowledge and understanding of:

  • the core disciplines that contribute to the study of education: history, philosophy, psychology and sociology
  • the diversity of learners and the complexities of the learning process;
  • the development of schooling, teaching and education policy in the UK and internationally;
  • the wider economic, political and socio-cultural contexts of education
  • enquiry methods used in education;
  • career options across the education sector

You’ll gain first hand experience of the education sector through the professional placement module in your second year. This is designed to help formulate your career identity and professional development needs. You’ll further learn how to present your ideas confidently in a variety of ways, know how digital technology is used for various learning and professional purposes and to work both collaboratively and independently.

Course structure

Year one

You’ll be introduced to the basic principles of education: who we educate, why we educate and how we educate.

You’ll gain an understanding of how educational enquiry informs policy and practice, and get an introduction to some of the key disciplines and theoretical perspectives that inform the study of education.

Year two

Using an interdisciplinary approach, you’ll focus on understanding the core issues impacting educational experience and outcomes.

In semester two, you’ll engage in a placement in a professional education setting such as with a local authority service, charitable or youth organisation or school. This will enable you to see firsthand how theory translates into practice, and permit you to try out potential career options.

You’ll have time to reflect on your career identity and your professional development needs. You will work closely with our careers service in understanding the career opportunities available to you across the education sector, both at home and abroad.

Professional Placement Year

The optional Professional Placement Year between level 5 and level 6 is an ideal opportunity to further develop your understanding of the professional education sector. It allows you to ‘try out’ a potential career pathway and to focus on the acquisition of key professional skills. It’s also a good way to grow your professional networks.

Year Three

Your final undergraduate year is an excellent transition into employment or further study. You’ll continue to develop your own interests and apply theoretical perspectives through a wide range of optional modules.

The core modules offer a supported approach to educational enquiry through the taught dissertation. You’ll be able to study an area of interest using principally desk-based approaches. You’ll work together in action learning sets, gaining weekly support from your peers and academic tutors.

How will I be assessed?

You’ll be formally assessed through coursework. There are no exams.

Assessments could include essays, group presentations, research-based reports and portfolio-based work. We’ll provide you with regular feedback on how well you’re doing and give you regular guidance on how to improve your skills, knowledge and understanding.

We provide many opportunities for formative assessment and feedback as well as a personal reflection on your progress, learning needs and goal setting.

How will I be taught?

Teaching is through a mix of lectures, seminars, online directed tasks and individual tutorials. Seminars provide opportunities for you to discuss, ask questions and get involved in activities and debates. In year one and two your minimum timetabled time will be 12 hours per week.

You’ll be taught by experienced university staff, many of whom are actively engaged in academic research and publication which informs their teaching. You will also benefit from visiting speakers – these include headteachers, educational advisers, specialist researchers and international visitors – and our careers advisors and experts in academic skills based in the Writing and Learning Centre.

Opportunities

Study abroad

You’ll have the opportunity to study in a wide range of locations around the world, by taking advantage of our Erasmus+ and Study Abroad programmes.

There are opportunities to undertake extra-curricular study visits abroad. In your first year there is an opportunity to take part in a study visit to Spain; in year two in Zambia; and in your final year, Nepal. Please note that these trips involve additional costs, e.g. for travel and accommodation.

Work placements, industry links and internships

100% of our undergraduate students in the School of Education take part in a placement during the course of their degree. In year two there is a compulsory placement for all students of Education Studies in a professional educational setting within the sector or in a school.

Previous students have also worked with charities, youth centres, and third-sector organisations, Local Authorities as well as schools and early years settings and in Higher Education departments.

We’ll also support you in finding volunteering opportunities during your time with us.

Careers

Education Studies will provide an excellent basis for you to work with learners of all ages in different settings and contexts. You may choose to work in educational and training advisory roles in a range of organisations including local community , youth clubs, businesses, local authorities, non-government organisations and charities, museums, art galleries and libraries or policymaking.

As well as going on to study for the PGCE our graduates have been recruited by Nottingham Trent International College, Explore Learning, the NHS and many schools and Local Authorities working in Educational roles such as tutors, trainers and Higher Level Teaching Assistants.
