Biosciences labs
From microbiological culturing and analysis, to biochemistry and physiology, we have the facilities to satisfy your curiosity.
Our facilities
Our laboratories, glasshouses and experimental areas provide specialist facilities for a wide range of biological studies including aquatic, ecological, anatomical and soil analysis.
Modern ecological surveying equipment such as bat detectors and night vision wildlife cameras enable you to be involved in interesting and contemporary biological research studies.
In addition, we have ‘low hazard’ laboratory space where you can carry out activities such as the preparation and assessment of food, exercise or psychological studies.
Cell culture lab
Our bespoke cell culture laboratory allows you to carry out projects on living cell lines (such as those from mammalian and insect origin) in a clean environment. It's primarily used by BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science students, as well as those studying related Life Science courses.
The main lab contains a biosafety cabinet and air extraction to prevent contamination of the cells and ensure appropriate storage to keep them alive. Next door you'll find the entry vestibule where you'll ‘gown up’ in full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – experience that's particularly valuable if you're hoping to embark upon a career in scientific research.
In your final year, you can use the lab for dissertation research, investigating topics such as the effect of antioxidants on human fibroblast cells, and the effects of caffeine-induced cellular stress on DNA damage responses.
Specialist equipment
You’ll find instruments for: chemical, physiological, environmental and DNA analysis; microbiological culturing; and microscopy. This is supported by experienced and enthusiastic technical staff.
Natural laboratory
The Newton Park campus is an excellent location for studying biology and similar subjects. The campus provides a rich variety of woodland, grassland and freshwater habitats, which are used extensively in practical work.
