What made you choose further study at Bath Spa University?
I studied Creative Writing here at and then progressed straight on to MA Writing for Young People. I decided to continue my studies here at Bath Spa because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after my degree - my postgraduate course offers me more insight into the publishing industry and connections with current professionals. I also make use of a lot of the support offered here, and I liked the idea of being able to continue my studies in an environment I already knew.
What has been the main difference between undergraduate and postgraduate study for you?
I've found that postgraduate study is a big step up from undergraduate, as a lot more of the study time is independent. However, this
gives you a lot more freedom with your work.
"Continuing at Bath Spa meant that I could benefit from the £2,000 scholarship for continuing alumni. "
What advice would you give someone considering progressing to postgraduate study at BSU?
If you’re considering postgraduate study, I’d definitely recommend attending the open days throughout the year. These were really useful as they gave me an opportunity to ask questions to the lecturers in person and learn about the modules for the course.
Talking to the lecturers also helped me to prepare my portfolio so I could be confident before submission. I love studying here at Bath Spa because all of my lecturers are really kind, down to earth and always enthusiastic to help in any way they can.
Did you have any doubts about postgraduate study?
Although I wanted to deepen my studies and develop my writing craft into postgraduate, I was also worried about the cost. Continuing at Bath Spa meant that I could benefit from the £2,000 scholarship for continuing alumni. This helped cut down the costs substantially and continuing my studies became more financially realistic.
Bath Spa also offers many of their courses part-time, so I could continue working alongside my studies without fear of falling behind.
What have you enjoyed most about your course?
Now I’m halfway through my first year of postgraduate, I’m amazed at how far my skills have developed from undergraduate. Learning with other mature students has been incredibly valuable in introducing new perspectives and insights into my writing.
I think continuing to study at Bath Spa is an amazing opportunity for anyone looking to further develop their expertise and make connections with other likeminded people.
