Tim Liardet – Bath Spa University

Personal statement

Tim Liardet is Professor of Poetry and the Co-Chair of the Bath Spa University Research Centre for Contemporary Writing. He coordinates most Undergraduate modules concerned with poetry and all MA modules concerned with poetry. He also teaches poetry to PhD level.

Liardet is of Huguenot extraction and has produced eight collections of poetry. His third collection Competing with the Piano Tuner was a Poetry Book Society Special Commendation and long-listed for the Whitbread Poetry Prize in 1998 and his fourth To the God of Rain a Poetry Book Society Recommendation for Spring 2003. Liardet was awarded a Hawthornden Fellowship in 2002. He has reviewed poetry for such journals as The Independent, The Guardian, The Independent on Sunday, Poetry Review and PN Review and was Poet-in-Residence at The Guardian. The Blood Choir, his fifth collection, won an Arts Council England Writers Award as a collection-in-progress in 2003, was a Poetry Book Society Recommendation for Summer 2006 and shortlisted for the 2006 TS Eliot Prize. Tim Liardet has performed his work on BBC Radio Three and BBC Radio Four and read at many major festivals; he has read at the Ars Interpres Festival, Stockholm, and has been visiting poet at the Internationales Literaturfestival Berlin. His poetry has been translated into Farsi, Macedonian and German. Priest Skear, a half-collection that turns the drowning of the twenty three Chinese cocklepickers in 2004 into a sort of political allegory, appeared in 2010 and was the Poetry Book Society Pamphlet Choice for Winter 2010. The Storm House, his eighth collection,appeared from Carcanet in July 2011. At Gris-Gris, a pamphlet, is due in October 2012; his next full collection, to be published by Carcanet, in September 2014; and a New and Selected Poems due from the same publisher in September 2015.
