Did you know that we have considerable tree collections at our main campus sites – some of which are quite an age?

These veteran trees are stable and bring value to the landscape, but are vulnerable to damage from high winds, which can damage our younger trees, too. Other factors can add to this risk: leaves on the tree increasing the "sail effect", rainfall making ground conditions wet, and wind direction.

All the busy areas with high footfall are under a carefully managed tree safety inspection programme. At Newton Park campus, our Grounds Team monitors the weather via the Met Office. If there's a risk of high winds, particularly with strong gusts, or if the Met Office has issued an amber weather warning, we close all the wooded paths.

Staying safe on campus during windy weather

During spells of high winds, we'll close some pathways and ask you to avoid areas with trees. For your safety, please follow the signage during path closures and don't use paths until the signs are removed.
