Giving furniture a second life
Wednesday, 22 April, 2026Bath Spa University has donated a large volume of unused furniture to local schools within the Palladian Academy Trust, including Ralph Allen school.
Earlier this year, the university contacted Ralph Allen School and the Palladian Academy Trust, to offer a donation of surplus furniture. The Trust, which supports schools across Bath and Wiltshire, welcomed the opportunity, recognising both of the value of items and the importance of reducing waste. Representatives met with BSU’s sustainability team to identify which pieces would be most beneficial for their schools.
Since, hundreds of items of furniture have since been distributed across the Trust’s 13 schools. The donation included chairs, office chairs, desks, sofas, and stools. By repurposing these items, the University has prevented unnecessary waste while supporting local schools.
Emma Jakins, Sustainability Co-ordinator at BSU, commented on the donation:
“We are immensely proud to create opportunities not only to prevent waste but also to support local organisations. Connecting with the Trust has ensured that BSU’s surplus furniture is put to good use, enhancing learning environments for students and staff throughout the Palladian Academy Trust. We will continue to work with local organisations to find ways to reduce waste and share resources.”
This initiative not only provides local schools with much-needed resources but also reflects a shared commitment to sustainability and responsible reuse. By giving these items a second life, BSU and the Trust are helping to reduce waste while improving both learning and working environments.
Hannah Baker, Executive Assistant at Ralph Allen School, reflected:
“It was wonderful to be approached with this opportunity. We were delighted to give these furniture items a new home, where they are now being used daily across our schools and offices. Partnerships like this make a real difference-both to our community and to the environment.”
She added;
“We are incredibly grateful to the University for thinking of us and for their willingness to support local organisations in such a practical and impactful way"
