Bath Carnival signs new partnership with BSU

Monday, 25 March, 2024

Bath Spa University has recently become partners with Bath Carnival. Bath Carnival joins 14 other organisations across the creative and cultural sector in Bath that the University is partnered with.

Now in its eleventh year, the award-winning carnival will take over the city on the 13 July with drumming bands, dancers, costumes, giant puppets, sound systems, eco-floats, schools and community groups. They will also be holding a free Party in the Park in Sydney Gardens from 10am – 10pm, in which attendees will hear from live bands and DJs whilst enjoying food and drink from local businesses.

Bath Carnival also delivers hundreds of hours of creative activities, arts-based workshops and learning opportunities to the local community throughout the year. With increasingly limited access to the arts, they are ensuring that vulnerable children and adults, often from deprived areas of the city, have equal opportunity to experience music, dance, theatre and costume making.

As part of this, they will be offering two free Puppetry Masterclasses for students and young artists in the Bath and North East Somerset region. This will give attendees a new specialised skill in puppetry.

There are plenty of ways to get involved with Bath Carnival besides the workshops. The carnival relies on volunteers to help the project run smoothly. These volunteering opportunities include being a festival gate steward, support artist, photographer and more.

Hannah Whiting, Head of Business Development at Bath Spa University, said:

“We’re delighted to add Bath Carnival to our growing list of community and cultural partnerships at Bath Spa University. This partnership will grant students opportunities to get involved with the carnival through a series of placements, workshops and volunteering places, and further embed the University in the local community. We are excited to see how the partnership evolves over the next year.”

Stuart Matson, Director of Bath Carnival, said:

“We’ve had many great experiences supporting Bath Spa University students over the years, and we’re very excited to develop this relationship as a cultural partner. This new agreement will open the fascinating world of carnival arts to young creatives in Bath and help inspire the next generation of puppeteers, costume makers and set designers. It’s so important that our early-career artists are given the chance to work on locally led arts projects and showcase their skills at live events in their area. We hope that those embarking on placements with Bath Carnival this year will be motivated to continue their creative journeys in B&NES once they graduate.”
