Business School students complete Carbon Literacy certification

Wednesday, 8 December, 2021

Students at the Bath Business School were the first to pass the Carbon Literacy certification process this month, by looking at their own carbon footprints and what they could do to change it, including the way they travel, what they eat, how they shop, what they buy, perhaps even who they might want to work for.

Run by the carbon education charity the Carbon Literacy Project, this is the first time the students have engaged with the project to become certified as carbon literate.

Carbon Literacy means being aware of the impact of everyday activities on the climate, and knowing what steps can be taken to reduce emissions as an individual, a community group, or an organisation.

For students this can add significant value to their CV and employability as many organisations will be looking to those with skills and awareness of impacts going forward.

"The practical benefits of carbon literacy training become vital as we operate within the ongoing climate emergency. The ethos of the module is that students can become agents of change and see change in their roles as students, family members, citizens and consumers," Business and Management Course Leader Darren Hoad said.

"But the best actual outcome is that one student posted her success of becoming certified Carbon Literature on Linkedin, and within a few days a local hospitality association got in touch with her asking her to address their group and explain the benefits of footprinting to their business."

Learners who have completed a days’ worth of approved Carbon Literacy learning can be certified as Carbon Literate. As an approved provider of the training, the Business school is able to offer it to staff and students across the university. The next cohort run will be January 2022.
