New creative hub launches on Twerton High Street

An empty shop on Twerton High Street is being transformed into a vibrant creative space for the community.

Bath Spa University has teamed up with Little Lost Robot CIC, Bath and North East Somerset Council, Creativity Works, and Youth Connect South West as part of a project called Creative Twerton to breathe new life into disused spaces. Thanks to the partnership, the former Urban Ink tattoo studio on Twerton High Street is now a buzzing creative hub.

Creative Twerton will officially open its doors on Saturday 19 November with a free launch event open to the public between 3pm and 5pm. During this time there will be the chance to take part in creative activities including textiles and digital arts, as well as an opportunity to share ideas on what free activities could take place.

The work to improve the spaces has been led by a local team, including Twerton residents. As a result of their efforts, Creative Twerton can now offer affordable ‘maker’ spaces and exhibition space for local artists, including students and art graduates from local colleges and Bath Spa University.

Looking ahead, a series of free activities for residents have been planned including regular art lunches, and “Robot Your High Street” sessions for young adults. The space also provides access to Wi-Fi and computers, after school provision, food and a warm bank over the winter, and there are plans to run regular youth services.

Ruby Sant, Creative and Cultural Development Officer at Bath Spa University, and owner of Little Lost Robot, said:

“We are hugely excited about this space as it allows us to show the vital impact of arts and community engagement on wellbeing for a community, and as importantly simultaneously offer vital basic services for those in need. Ongoing we will be building and developing exciting work with people in the space, including a commission for Hampton Court Palace and for Kew next spring.

“We open up vacant spaces for our communities to spend time creating together in a way that costs nothing. We have sessions for different age groups and different focuses throughout the day. We welcome you to join us, whenever suits you.

“We offer ways to help focus and develop your various skills and we can support you in pathways into further education, training, employment or other opportunities in your specialist interests.

“If you are a graduate or emerging artist looking to run creative workshop sessions or for space to make work, then please talk to us.”

The team have plans to expand into the neighbouring premises by January 2023.
