BSU Film and TV graduate wins a prestigious Emmy award

Friday, 12 April, 2024

Bath Spa University BA Film, Television and Digital Production graduate Ellie Bowler wins an Emmy award for Outstanding Mixing and Sound Editing, specifically Foley Editing on the Netflix documentary – Island of the Sea Wolves.

Ellie came to contribute to ‘Island of the Sea Wolves’ through her work for the Bristol-based audio post-production facility, Wounded Buffalo Sound Studios. She started her career journey into audio post-production initially as a runner, then proving her sound editing skills and landing in foley editing.

After two years, Ellie is now the Primary Foley Editor at Wounded Buffalo and she gets to work on a variety of inspiring programmes. The work Ellie did on ‘Island of the Sea Wolves’ was an exciting introduction into natural history sound for her – and she took to it like a duck to water with her award-winning work.

Ellie says:

“I have a real interest in natural history but in this programme in particular, I really liked that the episodes show the different seasons on Vancouver Island and how the wildlife there has to adapt to their environment, and baby animals are always a winner for me!”

Reflecting on her time at Bath Spa University, Ellie told us

“My favourite part of the Film, Television and Digital Production course was collaborating with my friends practically; making short films, promotional videos and multi-camera productions. I feel incredibly lucky to have had such an excellent lecturer in Ed Tristram, who encouraged me all throughout my time at BSU and onwards since graduation which has led me naturally to where I am now.”

Ellie’s advice for anybody aspiring to work in film and television is to ‘go for every opportunity’. She says:

“I originally applied for a different job at Buffalo, even though it wasn’t quite right for me. I didn’t get the job, but they offered me the chance to run in the studio and it took off from there. Be flexible and don’t shy away from showing how passionate you are!”

Congratulations Ellie Bowler for winning such a prestigious award with your inspiring work. If you would like to hear Ellie’s work in action, ‘Island of the Sea Wolves’ is available to watch on Netflix.
