Graduation Preview event prepares students for ceremony success

Wednesday, 7 June, 2023

Hundreds of final year students are even better prepared for their summer graduation ceremonies thanks to Bath Spa University’s first ever Graduation Preview event.

The event, which was held at The Forum on 31 May, was delivered by the Bath Spa University community to give soon-to-be graduates a glimpse of what to expect when they return to the venue this July for their official graduation ceremonies.

On the day, students had the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of what their big day will entail including a chance to explore the entire venue, ask questions, practise their walk across the stage before they do it for real in front of  their friends and family, try on academic dress such as robes and hats, and more, all in the comfort of a relaxed preview setting.

Tours taking the students to Bath College were also included as this is where they will collect their gowns and hats from and where official photography will take place ahead of their ceremony at The Forum.  The students also had the chance to enjoy a delicious complimentary afternoon tea plus an opportunity to enter a raffle giving away chances to win £25 towards their transport or accommodation costs for graduation.

Melissa Mullhall, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Academic Planning at Bath Spa University, said: “I am absolutely thrilled to see our very first BSU Graduation Preview event taking place today. The cross University team leading the Graduation Preview event alongside Graduation have pulled out all the stops to accomplish this innovative idea.

“I am thrilled to see that our students in attendance had a fun and fulfilling day. This new and highly anticipated event was one of the first of its kind for the Higher Education industry and we introduced it to alleviate any uncertainty and provide our final year students with a sneak peak of what graduation will look and feel like, so that they know what to expect on the day."

“The event proved to be an exciting, social and engaging way to help our students visualise graduation and its key elements, without any of the time pressures. I am really delighted to have seen this idea come to fruition, and would like to thank our community of colleagues and partners for bringing this event to life, and tailoring it perfectly to our students. I look forward to celebrating everyones’ achievements at this summer’s graduation ceremonies.”

"Please thank the graduation team for a lovely afternoon on the 'how to' of graduating. The organisation was good today so I know it'll all go swimmingly on the day. It was a lovely touch to have afternoon tea - it was excellent. I'm really looking forward to the day now and the news of the gathering in the park after will make it really special."
