Bath Spa University sponsors New City College awards

Tuesday, 24 October, 2023

On Monday 16 October, Bath Spa University sponsored the New City College Student Achievement Awards in a ceremony that honoured students for their resilience and their commitment to their studies.

Bath Spa University was a key sponsor of the awards and representatives of the University travelled to the Leonardo Royal London City Hotel to attend the ceremony.

As an educational partner, Bath Spa has been working together with New City College to help students achieve their future career goals. By delivering a range of programmes, including courses in Education, awarded by Bath Spa, the institutions hope to offer more opportunities for young adults to pursue higher education in East London.

Professor Simon Haslett, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Partnership Strategy) at Bath Spa University, commented on the partnership. He said:

“We are extremely pleased to be working in partnership with New City College (NCC) in providing opportunities for learners to engage in higher education studies in this part of London under the auspices of the NCC University Centre. The University has been delivering courses from NCC's Hackney campus for a number of years and we are delighted to be continuing to offer a range of quality programmes from the campus. The NCC Student Achievement Awards offered a wonderful occasion to celebrate both the inspirational successes achieved by students and our close partnership.”

The awards ceremony recognised students who have overcome adversity and exceeded expectations and friends, family, local businesses and even a VIP guest, gathered to celebrate their achievements.

Rapper, author and broadcaster Guvna B, took to the stage to speak about growing up in the East End and the strong influence his education had on the trajectory of his life and career. He emphasised the importance of education and praised the student award winners for their hard work and dedication.

The evening also recognised the remarkable differences colleges make - from supporting students, building up the local community and boosting businesses. The award winners were all examples of students whose time at college had a profound effect on their lives. They were reflections of what the college embodies, including showing compassion for peers and commitment to their studies in times of adversity.

New City College Group Principal and CEO, Gerry McDonald, closed the ceremony, congratulating the students and sponsors who made the evening possible. He said:

“What a wonderful evening we have had. I have been impressed and inspired by our students and their stories tonight. We are immensely proud of all of them for these incredible achievements. I would like to thank our sponsors for their support of this important evening, and I also want to thank my teaching and support staff colleagues who have helped our students to reach such high standards of progress and achievement.”
