Sarah Stone – Bath Spa University

 Alumni profile

Course studied: BA (Hons) Dance
Graduating year: 2017

Since graduating, Sarah, now based in Bristol, has built a portfolio career working as a performer and dance teacher in a variety of settings. She has performed for Off The Map Dance Company and The Flaming Feathers, and currently teaches a variety of dance, yoga and mindfulness in a range of primary schools in Bristol and Bath.

Sarah has experienced first-hand the physical and mental health benefits dance can have on children and young people. This has developed her passion for making dance as accessible and inclusive as possible, whether that’s as an audience member appreciating dance, or as a participator themselves.

Sarah also teaches for Flamingo Chicks, an inclusive dance school for children and adults with learning difficulties and disabilities, and runs a dance school in Sandford as Vice-Principal of Danceblast.

She has recently been selected to be part of New Adventures Overture programme for 2018/19, a professional development opportunity for community dance artists across the UK. She is also performing for New Works Ballet Theatre (a new ballet company starting in Bristol) and will be performing in their first ballet in November 2018.

Sarah's Bath Spa story

My degree at Bath Spa prepared me for my career by increasing my contemporary technique and performance skills, as well as developing my choreographic skills through various workshops, creative tasks and techniques.

However, perhaps more significantly, it made me conscious of the variety of job roles there are in the dance sector – all of equal value. The professional development module allowed me to discover and be inspired by professional artists’ journeys and advice, as well as giving me the confidence to network and gain connections, apply for projects and jobs, and provide me with the insight I needed to realise what I was passionate about.

The course’s various modules and projects prepared me as a freelancer by mirroring the diversity of roles and skills I would need to fulfil the portfolio career I have built.
